Samenvatting

The article by Y.G. Tiguntsev and V.V. Sobolev presents a catalogued collection of 9th–10th-century coins with Arabic inscriptions, documented as of early 2023 within the southwestern districts of the modern Bryansk region of Russia. These districts correspond to areas where, during the Middle Ages, the Radimichi tribal union, the mixed settlement zone (Starodub Opolye), and the Severians intersected.

By the late 10th century, edge and central cutouts were discovered in the mixed settlement zone alongside complete dirhams and their fragments. These circulated systematically and extensively among the Severians as individual accounting units. Based on the coexistence of diverse coinage types in the findings, the authors conclude that the northern part of the Snovsk Thousand – specifically Starodub Opolye – had already become a "transitional trade zone" by the late 10th century. Here, two monetary systems were used: one based on the weight of silver scrap, and the other on whole coins and circular cutouts counted individually.
