Hi all.
I would really appreciate some advice in this coin.
As you can see it's a 1582 James vi 30 Shillings.
Silver, weighs 22.7 grams is 38/39 mm diameter.
I was lucky enough to have found this one whilst metal detecting, after the usual Treasure Trove process, I'm now free to keep or sell.
Seems to be quite rare, I would Appriciate any thoughts as to it's value and grade.
Thanks for looking.
Difficult to tell much about the value without pictures, because the condition of a coin determines for a great part the value. To add a picture, click on the second last button and follow the instructions.
Unfortunately I only have a Spink with the coins of England, not from Scotland and your coin is too old for the Krause catalogues (Krause only starts with coins from 1600 on).
Many thanks Essor Prof,
Apologies for the late reply.
That's some very useful info. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I am delighted to see it has some value.
Perhaps you would have an idea as to the best place to sell it? I am in Scotland, perhaps a coin dealer?
Anyhow, thanks again for your help Prof.
That's some find. May I ask in what part of Scotland you found it? I do metal detecting myself (although only in rallies, I haven't got my own permissions). I'd recommend taking good pictures and sending them to the auction houses (Spink, London Coins, DNW etc) for evaluation.
It was found the Scottish Borders.
I'm fortunate enough to have, quite frankly some of the best land around, by way of permissions. 13k plus acres over a few sites. Ridiculous history, forts, castles, Battle sites, brochs. Roman camps and forts, roman roads. Sites with scheduled monuments, spoilt really. Have a ridiculous amount of things with treasure trove Scotland.
I'm grateful for the info in your post, many thanks for that.
What an amazing find. Yours is the rarer variety with the denomination placed on a single line. The 2015 Spink catalogue states £575 for one in fine condition and £2,000 for one in very fine.
