I have been lucky enough to find some truly interesting and unique finds.
And I’m looking for answers about one find and I’m hoping I will find them here.
A few weeks ago I dug a ring. It has a very solid heavy setting. Acid tests are inconclusive as to the composition of the setting and I will be taking it to a spectgraph soon for a definitive analysis.
The questions center around the “coin or token” that is mounted on the setting.
First, note the prongs holding the coin in place. There are 8, twice as many as normal. And they are quite sturdy. Somebody did not want that coin to be lost.
The coin appears to have a Mayan / Incan calendar inscribed on the face. However those people did not use coins as currency. The Mayans used chocolate as currency.
BUT! If you look through the ring you will clearly see a face. We’re 99% sure the face is Father Miguel Hidalgo, the “Father of Mexico” who led the Mexican Revolution. But I can not find any trace of a coin like this and so am assuming this is probably a souvenir token. It’s just that setting and those prongs that have me scratching my head.
any ideas, thoughts, information?
