Today AUSTRALIA has launched a world first ‘Donation Dollar’, a single dollar coin designed to be given to those in need.

An initial 4.5 million Donation Dollars have been produced and will be progressively released from 2 September 2020 with the intention to produce and release 25 million coins over the next few years – one for every Australian.

The Royal Australia Mint will progressively circulate 25 million of the dollar coins, one for every Australian, over the coming years. Minister for Housing and Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar said the coins are designed to remind Australians that any time is a good time to donate to causes they are passionate about.

“Australians are renowned for their generosity and lending a hand to those in need,” Minister Sukkar said.
“The Mint’s new Donation Dollar is designed to be an easy and accessible way for Australians to enjoy the benefit of giving small amounts more frequently.”
“The Donation Dollar can be spent like any other $1 coin, but when donated makes an on-going impact on the lives of Australian’s in need.”
It’s estimated charitable giving in Australia will decrease by 18 per cent over the next two years as a result of global pandemic.

In the lead up to the International Day of Charity on 5 September, Assistant Minister for Charities Zed Seselja said it was a timely reminder of the challenges our community is facing during this crisis.
“This year we know there are many Australians doing it tough and Australia’s 57,000 charities and not-for-profits have not been immune to these economic challenges,” Assistant Minister Seselja said.
“While we continue to face the challenge of COVID-19 pandemic together, the Donation Dollar is a long-term idea we hope continues to provide a simple reminder to Australians that if you are in a position to donate it, please do so.”

A thoughtful and clever thing to do. Lets hope they circulate well and are used for it's intended purpose for those truly in need.

I agree with you Harry .. But somehow I think some of them will find their way into peoples collections. ;)

Interestingly a lot of the Facebook coin groups I am also a member of have vowed to not allow the sale of these coins on their pages.

I also have not seen any pre-sales of them on Ebay either, so am wondering if Ebay has also banned the sale of them?

Mike,
Are they in circulation yet? Have you bought one?
I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.
For all you banknote collectors. Link to my swap list.

I haven't seen any yet but am looking out for them. Still none on Ebay.com.au to buy, so as I suspected they might have banned the sale of them maybe?

When I eventually get some, and I will, I'll keep one for you don't worry Geoff. ;)

Is COINMAN1 one of those truly in need?

Is COINMAN1 one of those truly in need?

Yes he definitely is. We have to look after our poor UK cousins as much as we can. Now that they are free of the shackles of the EU they need as much support as they can get from their former colonies. ;)

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

It didn't take long ... there's a bag of 20 uncirculated coins that has already reached over $200 at auction with two days still to go!

According to the Donation Dollar website https://donationdollar.com.au/pdf/DonationDollar-FAQ-20-August-2020.pdf (p.3)

Q: Will these coins be available to purchase individually, in sachets or in rolls?
A: Unfortunately no, the only way to obtain these coins is in general circulation and by checking your change.

Q: Is there a chance of these coins being found in a Mint roll or sachet of $1 coins?
A: No, the only way to obtain these coins is in general circulation and by checking your change.

... so how did this person obtain these in the first place? It also appears that he/she has a few sachets because if you can't wait then you can buy one containing 20 uncirculated coins for just $500!

I also meant to mention, great work brismike in keeping the Australian section of the Numista catalogue so up-to-date and informative ... your efforts are much appreciated!

Someone just paid $306 for coins that will be worth $20 in the very near future ... crazy! 😲

Almost forgot ... plus $22.50 postage!
I haven't managed to get any Australian 2019 coins with the Jody Clark obverse design come my way here in New Zealand.

As for Australian coins dated 2020, totally nothing has come my way - thanks to travel into being almost totally banned, due to COVID-19!

The same thing also applies to banknotes & coins dated 2020 from other British Commonwealth countries, plus Ireland, Somaliland, South Sudan, & Zimbabwe.

Aidan.
