Carolingian Silver Coin - Charlemagne or Charles the Bald?

Hi,

I have this silver Denar/Denarius from one of the Carolingian/Frankish Empire Charles. It all looks genuine to me, but does anyone know how to tell the difference between Charlemagne & Charles the Bald?

Thanks

Sorry. Extremely late to this.

As someone who works in a museum with a couple of these exact coins, it's sadly very hard, borderline impossible to tell if they were struck during the reign of Charlemagne or Charles the Bald.

The only conclusive way to know would be to check the provenance of the coin. As in finding out where it was found, in case the particular location or hoard has connections to the respective monarchs.

The other less definitive way is knowing how much you paid for it (if you bought it). Charles the Bald deniers typically go for about 100 or so on average. Charlemagne goes for at least 1000. But that's not the best way to determine the coin as sellers can potentially lie about the coin, or not realise it's one or the other.

I'm only assuming my own personal denier is Charles the Bald because the seller said so and because I only paid 100 for it.

Sorry I couldn't help much. And for a late reply. But hopefully it gives you a little piece of mind.

Good luck!

Pierre
