Hello all,

Here is an evasion halfpenny from the lot I posted in the "Additions to your collection" thread:

I don't have the books to identify it more precisely, and I'm surprised how little I found online searching for "GEORGUIS".

Hi Ian, Allexis is right. Maybe you gave me the wrong link?

Yes, not that coin. That was George 1st and the coin asked about is George 3rd -
with letters reversed as GEORGUIS III to evade copying - so-called 'evasion' coinage.

I thought I found it here ...
https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/C_SSB-235-56
but it has different lettering >
GEORGUIS III RUX on obverse// BRITEN NET on reverse
whereas yours looks like it says BRITAN NIA on it.

There are many varieties of Evasion halfpennies, we have some already listed on Numista here.
If you can't find it there, have a look at the list here.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

Sorry your are right yes its George III not I Rick is correct please look at the links and you should find the the coin.
Ian.
By process of elimination, since your bust is facing right, then yours can only by Atkins#239 with 'GEORGUIS III RUX' to the obverse and 'BRITAN NIA' to the reverse with 1771 in the exergue. I don't believe this type is currently listed on Numista.

I went to your link, Radrick, before seeing your last message and came to the same conclusion by the elimination process:

237. L. GEORGUIS III RUX / figure seated BRILLA NGE 1771
238. L. GEORGUIS III RUX / figure seated BRITAN NET 1771

239. R. GEORGUIS III RUX / figure seated BRITAN NIA 1771

There was a GEORGUIS in the catalogue but it was a mistake in the transcription and got it corrected last night.

Thank you all for your help!

And here is Atkin's Tradesmen Tokens, which I couldn't find by just typing the title, for some reason:

The tradesmen's tokens of the eighteenth century

Google tells me there's at least one GEORGUIS token in there, though I suppose it wouldn't be an evasion token.

EDIT: I found it: check page 390.
