Hi there, still working on my catalogue ....πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ having a problem in Egypt. As the markings on the coins are not in any language I speak.. it's a bit harder than I thought it would be.

I have identified a 1 Millieme - Fuad (right)
1342 (1924)... but I cannot find the second coin...

The coin I identified on Numista, the 1 Millieme - Fuad 1342 (1924) has markings I am calling 1727 and 1973. (Thats what they look like if they were english πŸ™ˆ)

the other coin has markings I'm calling 1703 and 1970 but I cannot find it on the coin search.

Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong?

Kind thanks!!!

The coin or the right has 1935 at the bottom and 1354 at the top. The link below will help you translate the dates.

https://en.numista.com/numisdoc/calendar-islamic-30.html

A search of Egypt and Gregorian date 1935 will return your coin.

I'm really surprised you found the first one using 1727 and 1973. :D
Thank you for the link... I'll be at it again tonight!

these Egyptian coins have been the hardest to identify so far! πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚

I didn't identify the first one by using the dates... I went thru the list page by page by page until I found anything that looked right then looked closer.. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ but I have a few that have me stumped so your link will really help...

thank you!
Don't worry, you'll be reading those Arabic numerals like you do the "English" ones in no time. :) Just remember that what you call "3" is a 4, and the "7" is actually a 6. And my mnemotechnic rule for the 2 trickiest ones when I started (7 and 8) was that 7 "V" points to 8 "^" which point to 7, when listed from top to bottom.

7 = V
8 = ^

And Welcome to Numista!

When I started I also had troubles to differentiate the 7 and 8
I think my trick is easier (at least that's how I could differentiate 7 and 8): the "V" is already in seVen.
That's a good one too. Whatever works I guess 8)

Last question on Egypt!!!

I understand coins getting damaged and metal getting "gorged out", but what kind of damage can add metal as if it's totally part of the coin?

sorry, best pictures I can get from my phone...

Good afternoon (morning here)! It looks to me like something was soldered or brazed to the coin, possible as some sort of jewelry. Maybe some others have seen this before and have a better answer but it was no doubt done after minting.
Glad you finished your Egypt coins. What's next?
Agreed, that's my thought too.
Thank you for your answers, I do agree!

I have now finished sorting my coins into countries and have added the coins by type and date to "My Collection" here on Numista. I just have my South African coins left to add which I'm doing now...

When they are all in, I'm going to try start grading the collection as I have not graded any of them.

I think I have my setting right that Numista members can see the coins I have added... but obviously I haven't put anything out for swapping or anything like that... I first want to get comfortable with what I do have πŸ˜‚
Yes, your collection is visible.

Take one step at a time. Grading is not easy so don't rush. Take your time or you have to do it all over again some time.
I agree, from my reading and researching, it looks to be a major task!

But I am finding this very interesting! I thought I was just going to sort the coins out and pass it on... but I have become addicted! I don't really care about value, I just want a nice organised collection. It was something my grandfather was going to do, then my dad was going to do it!! So I decided in honour of them both I will do it! πŸ€—
Congratulations, you've caught the numismatics bug! It's a hobby that can be of interest to you for a lifetime. I'm sure your father and grandfather would be very happy and proud of your efforts. You've come a long way in just a week!
Citeer: "DianneSmith"... but I have become addicted!
It happened to me too, fifty years ago and I still am. I mean the addiction, not the inheritance, I had to start from scratch.

Ok... now I've added all the coins from my inherited collection!! I've also added a handful of bank notes also in the collection. It's not a whole lot, but I love the variety. I wish I knew all the stories behind each coin. My Greatgrandfater, grandfather and father were all in the military, so I'm sure there are tales the coins could tell if they could!!

Now what!!?? I know I need to do "grading" but it terrifies me... but without doing grading, I don't know what else to do! I've got my whole magnifying glass and table set up, milligram scale on order so I can't stop now! πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ
There are quite a few articles on grading but it is a bit intimidating at first. I waited two years of using the site and getting used to how people graded coins before I started grading my collection. The most fun is to add coins to the swap list and start exchanging. You'll make a lot of friends all over the world. Best of luck!

Thank you!

I'm scared to put things up for swap when I really don't know what it is I have.... should I perhaps start with some of my duplicate coins?

And how do people swap coins? Must be virtually impossible now with Covid?

not that I'm in a rush, I just like fiddling and reading and learning... πŸ˜‚
While post offices are running slower than usual, most mail still flows around the world. Canada Post for instance has a list of countries where you cannot mail to, but the list is relatively small (~35) and most of those I wouldn't risk sending coins anyway.
Yes, put your duplicates on your swap list. You don't need to grade them, but make sure you note any condition "issues" (holed, bent, worn, year not legible, rust... you get the idea) as probably most of your circulating coins are in what would be considered Fine, Very Fine, and Extra Fine which many of us will gladly accept.

On the postage, South Africa is on everyone's "NO" list πŸ™ˆ and we barely have a post office anymore πŸ˜‚ but there are other ways and means I suppose....

On Grading, that's great advise, thank you ... I think I can get the just of basic condition... and if someone is interested, they can call the grading as they see it, I suppose....

thanks again, you have been most helpful and friendly!!
I don't want to take advantage of anyone's kind help, but I would like to ask about cleaning... My coin collection is old and has been in a box for many many years.. would a cold, lightly soapy wash be a terrible thing? I wouldn't scrub or try polish, but could I just give them a quick simple wash?

kind thanks in advance!
I think most collectors here (maybe not all) would agree that cleaning with mild soapy water is OK. This is a subject that comes up fairly often. I just did a search for "cleaning" in the forums and came up with 645 results!

Here's a recent forum post about cleaning.

Have you thought about how to display your collection or are you still using glass jars? :)

Also for your question about swapping, this may help
Swap on Numista - A complete guide
Exactly! Been reading the forum and the opinions are very far and wide apart ...

I would like to start "filing" my collection in folders, but would prefer them a little cleaner... and I just mean clean, as in not years of dust... not clean and shiny as they could be...

but obviously I don't want to damage them.

I am also of the opinion that none of my coins are Proof nor are they "limited edition" coins. They have been around longer than me and travelled more than I so a bit a rinse shouldn't hurt?
I think cleaning with a little soap and water won't affect the coin's value. Just make sure they are thoroughly rinsed free of all soap and are completely dried before putting them away.
Thank you!!!

since it's 3am my time zone... I think I better try get some sleep... πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Two important advices when you start swapping:
- During the negotiation of a swap, make pictures/scans of the coins your swap partner asks. Then it isn't important if your coins are graded or not, the swap partner can see for himself/herself if your coins are in an acceptable condition or not.
- Try to swap with members who already swapped a lot and have a high feedback rate. That way you avoid being scammed because, unfortunately, not everybody is trustworthy, even on Numista. Always check feedback first of potential swappers and avoid members with zero stars ratings. When you'll swap with experienced swappers they might ask you to send first because you're a newbie, but that isn't a big deal and it will only last till you have enough feedback on your own.

Good luck and happy collecting.
