Need Help Identifying a few Ancient Roman Coins

7 berichten • 82 keer bekeken
I have these three Ancient Roman Coins (I believe) in my collection but I am having a very difficult time identifying them. I have used a number of identification sites but just haven't had any success... perhaps because they aren't very clear. I have had great success with the Numista forum on a number of topics, so I thought I would post them here and see if I have any luck. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site and I have come to value it immensely. Thank you in advance for anything you have to contribute.

I look forward to your feedback.

They're all 4th century. The name of the emperor is written on the obverse legend and is unreadable on these coins. I think I can read "NST" on the second and "N CON" on the third coin so they're most likely Constantinian dynasty (all members of the dynasty had those letters in their name so it could be any one of them) while nothing is readable on the first coin.

First coin has a GLORIA EXERCITVS reverse, Two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them. Second VICTORIAE DD AVGG Q NN, two winged Victories standing facing each other. Third coin in my opinion has a FEL TEMP REPARATIO, soldier standing spearing fallen horseman, reverse but it could just be my imagination as the coin is very worn. You can find multiple examples of such coins online using the provided information.

I'd like to add that the first coin looks like a modern cast copy not an actual ancient. It's surface and edge look cast to me but why anyone would make a cast copy of a 1$ coin is beyond me so it could be real.
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.

I think that the reverse of the third coin is upside down, what do you think?

I wondered that myself. Because I couldn't make out the image, I didn't know which end was up! 🤣

I'm not sure, I rotated it and still don't see anything clearly. The chaotic lines make me think of the fallen horsemen but it could be anything.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks so much for your help... I'm going to look those up.

I'm very disappointed in the possibility that the first one could be a fake. I bought them on eBay from a very high-rated seller (jeffscoins) who guaranteed their authenticity and stated they were all 2000+ years old. He also promised a better quality than what I received so I admit I questioned their authenticity myself.

Here's the listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ancient-Coin-Estate-Lot-Roman-Greek-Byzantine-Bronze-Silver-Gold-BC-Money-/292091844593

Thanks again for your help. It's truly appreciated.

As per usual when it comes to ebay lots the coins in the photo are much nicer and more valuable then the ones your actually get. The coins are too far gone for me to give you an exact ID however I can tell you with a certainty they're 4th century so about 400 years shy of being 2000 years old. I can't say for a certainty that the first one is cast however it does very much look like it to me. What puzzles me is why anyone would cast it. Such a coin in decent grade with the emperor identified costs around 5$ to 8$, in low grade with the emperor being unidentifyable 1$ at best. Hopefully there were other, better, coins in it too.
