So far as Canada is concerned, a new type of notes should be added (in the box "Features"):
Canadian (Chartered) Bank note
Note the spelling (NOT "banknote"). These notes were issued by the banks (eventually only the Chartered Banks such as the Bank of Montreal, the Bank of Toronto, the Dominion Bank, etc. and were recognized by the Dominion government as legal currency, so much so that the government did not issue $10-$20 notes, and very few $5 notes, until the foundation of the Bank of Canada and a full range of denominations in 1935.
These large banks had such a strong profitable monopoly on issuing currency, that it took a few years for the Bank of Canada (BOC) to get off the ground & eclipse these frontrunners. The new central bank's single ally was
the Bank of Montreal who worked hard to delay the inevitable (yet assist the government's central bank enterprise). Concessions had to be made, including when the Chartered notes would no longer be issued (or "legal tender") & that is why Chartered banks issued banknotes during & a little bit after the BOC's debut.
I still hope someone will look into this. Serial_Number_8 is one of the top specialists on Canadian notes that we have here on Numista, so his support for this proposal is meaningful.
It's also better to do the change now before many of such notes are added ─ and there are many!
If you mean that the Bank of Montreal notes should be listed under Quebec, the Bank of Toronto under Ontario, etc., they shouldn't be, because the banks had branches all over the country and their notes circulated all over the country as well, so those are not local or provincial notes. Federal (i.e. national) legislation regulates money supply, but until the first series issued by the Bank of Canada in 1935, the government of Canada acknowledged the role of the chartered banks in issuing almost all $5 notes and all $10 and $20 notes.
If you mean something else, do let me know. I agree that there were provincial notes before the colonies/provinces joined the Dominion in 1867 or later. These should be listed separately.
There was 1 provincial government that issued a note - the Government of Alberta, which issued a 1 Dollar note called the Prosperity Certificate in 1936.
This has NEVER been listed in the Pick Specialised Catalog, but it is listed in Charlton though.
The Alberta Prosperity Certificates were indeed provincial, though not in the sense used in the coin catalogue where it means the colonies ("provinces") before the creation of the Dominion. Yet it's the best place for them and the Charlton catalogue does the same.
May I ask what is that "Pick Specialized Catalogue" you mention? Surely not a specialized catalogue for Canada?
