Hi everyone!

Got this coin from a guy on a bazzaar for a dollar or so… I identified that this coin is of Guangxu emperor, but i can't identufy the year.

Btw i didn't find the example of the coin with dots on the sides, so i doubt that the coin is geniune…

Can someone help me please? :'(

Hi! Yes,you are right: the 2 dots are the clue!

The year beared is 1901 but with other designs instead of dots flanking the legend.

You should also try the weight, the genuine silver 20 cents of this Chinese province must have 5.30g.

It's likely a fake. The English side is a Kiangnan 1 mace, but the Chinese side is a Fukien 1 mace.

Ho,ho,ho! Bravo for the fine observation!

Will check if its actually silver (lol)

Well, i used an app on my iphone to test with 2 coins:
- first was Canadian 999.999 silver coin and the metrics didn't change (around 55)
- and this fake coin as second one and the metrics went down (why)

So, silver can't be found with a magnet and the fact that there were no changes in magnetic field is 100% fine. But if the metrics went UP, then this would mean that there is FE (ferrum) in a fake coin. Why the metrics on the app went down? Probably that's silver, but not 100% clean? can't get it

Hi! Stan_Daniels,I haven't used such an app. (I even didn't know such kind of app. exists!) but I may ask if  you are positively sure that it gives accurate results in its testings?! Many apps. (on different fields) for smartphone are just for fun, they don't give the correct results they are supposed to give…

Andi

It's called Metal Detector EMF and has a green logo (i won't post a link here not to spam) :)

That app just acts like a glorified magnet that measures the magnetism of an object over the background noise (55 in your case).  It should go up when near a ferromagnetic material but remain the same otherwise.  It should never go down.  How low did it go? Did you orient your phone differently than when you took the background reading?  If the object is in your hand (not underground) then a common strong magnet will be just as useful.

Actually, I could get it to go down by positioning it between two magnets but I'm guessing you didn't do that.

No no) of course no other magnets were around)

Regarding the topic, what's the best way to confirm the coin is silver at home, in your opinion?

I've posted this before.

Here's one good discussion of non-destructive tests for silver, some cheap and easy, some hard or expensive.  If it is actually silver it does not mean it is authentic, however if it is not silver the answer is obvious.  So the goal is to try multiple tests, some may say “possibly silver” but if one says “not silver” you're done."
