USA 1971 S 1Dollar Eisenhower Proof Coin - Mint error? [opgelost]

8 berichten • 115 keer bekeken

Hello,

I've got this "USA 1971 S 1Dollar Eisenhower Proof Coin"

Front side: between the letter L and I of “Liberty” is a  mark , which is only visible if the coin is  tilted.  Also the "R" looks a bit sketchy.

Also on the back of the head seems to be some marks as well as on the back side… Any idea on potential value might it even be “doctored”?

Any help is appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Numista!

I have to ask…was the coin still in the plastic holder when these pictures were taken?

Ah, yes, looks like crinkled plastic - in all those places,

plus all round the edge. So the coin underneath may be alright.

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

If it's shrink wrapped then it's obvious.

Otherwise it looks like glue on the obverse and if it is really grey and not just refraction of the light (in the case of a plastic layer on top) it looks like damaged plating.

Hey there,

The Coin came in this plastic holder, unfortunately the case is cracked open …

Your coin is fine.  The plastic is causing this and I assume the fine scratches as well.

This is a silver coin, .800 outer layers bonded on to an inner layer on .209 silver for a net of .400 silver.

The pictures of the coin were taken without the plastic cover as it's been broken - the black coin holder was held by hand to snap the pics…

Ah.  OK.  Then might be something similar to what's referred to as milk spots. Basically, although they may be caused by the minting process they are not considered mint errors and in fact lower the value of the coin.  Here's a good article about them.  https://britanniacoincompany.com/blog/milk-spots-on-silver-coins/

In my opinion it's unlikely the coin was released from the mint that way.  This type of coin is produced and inspected by the mint with “white glove” treatment.  I doubt one like this would have slipped through.

Then again, it could be something else.
