I just noticed that my Exonumia collection has decreased in number despite me not having changed anything with it. After some detective work I've found that my Gibraltar 2.8 ecu pieces have been moved to the coin catalogue. Hence my query, what makes the Gibraltar ecu class as a coin whereas all other pieces of my ecu collection class as exonumia? Thank you.

The Gibraltarian ECUs never circulated - therefore, they can be classed as medal-coins that are now no longer legal tender.

 

The ECU was replaced by the Euro - as ‘ECU’ was very similar to the old French coin denomination.
