Genuine or fake 1932 Austria 2 schilling?

5 berichten • 208 keer bekeken

I recently purchased a couple 1932 Austrian 2 schillings.   The coin on the left was purchased from a collector. The coin on the right was purchased from a reputable dealer.  I am suspecting they both may be silver-plated copper fakes. The reason I am suspicious is their weights appear to be outliers from other Austrian 2 schillings of the same series but not the same date.  My 1930, 1931, 1933, and 1934 coins all weigh consistently around 12.05 grams. The two coins in question both weigh 11.83 grams.  The diameters and thicknesses all seem to match up with others in the series.  The surfaces of both coins tested positive for silver via acid testing.

In addition as you can see on the ”heads” side of the coin on the left—there is an area along the rim at 3-4 o’clock where it appears the silver plating has worn off and you can see copper underneath.

I understand that a coin can lose weight as a result of wear which might explain the weight discrepancy.  The coin on the left was sold to me as circulated, but the coin on the right was supposedly uncirculated.

I would like to get some expert opinions on this. Thank you in advance for your thoughts. I may be overthinking this, but IMO these coins just didn’t pass the smell test

I do think you are overthinking this. Such slight weight variances should be of little concern. The coin on the left looks like it was harshly cleaned at one time as it has that telltale whitish appearance indicative of a harsh chemical cleaning. Some natural tarnishing is starting to return to it at this point. The coin on the right I see no problems at all. Look at this example from NGC. Looks remarkably like one of yours.

At first I cannot see any motivation to produce a fake. The material is Ag 640, and the surface could be bleached before striking (this was done with german 5DM, made of Ag 625). You shouldn't think it is plated.

Try to do an XRF-test, than you know at least the exact metal-composition.

...you can run,  but you can't hide...

Both coins are genuine, one was apparently found somewhere in the ground and was in the ground for a long time, so it looks a little different now.
