Conders

Hello !

I've been really into conders lately. I've found a couple of sellers that only list them and a bunch every week. The Numista section doesn't have a lot of them, I plan to update it sometime between now and 2025 lol.

I really like the Buckinghamshire because it's not common and I got a good deal on it.

A# = Atkins, D&H = Dalton & Hamer. I could only find Atkins' book, but all the sellers use D&H, so I have to convert them. Which is actually a lot of fun!

It's rare, but I think the Kent conder is a mistake in Atkins who puts the year as 1795 (he has no pictures), and all the conders I've seen are 1794. He has a notable error with Lothian #1 where he lists the legend as “For Filtering Water” when it's actually “For Purifying Water”. But these are literally the only 2 mistakes I've seen

I think conders are so cool because they're like unofficial currency, which always gets my attention - provinces, notgeld, etc. There's even a George Washington conder, a lot of them are political, some advertizing.

The one sort of unique thing about them is they have edges that can vary and those can make the coin worth a lot more. I also like the Evasion currency, some have really funny lettering, spelling king George's name in all sorts of ways (Georgois, etc).   And these coins aren't worth that much - on ebay they can go as low as $10-15, and usually I don't bid for more than ~$25 unless it's something I really want

Very cool Zac!

I also really dislike modern designs and coins. Those French medals are absolute stunners. I also have some medals, some UK and German gaming tokens, and I've noticed a lot of 17th century Spanish Netherlands jetons for cheap show up $5-15, in good condition usually. I have a few 19th century British and Irish currency tokens. Don't particularly push for those because it feels like there's a million.

Really cool conders, I recently got Kircudbrightshire too. I just made a folder - a huge one for the English, and another for the rest. Something about conders is just so awesome to me.

Do you have the “Wilkenson” and “Wilkison” Warwickshire variations? I got two Wilkensons (different edges) and one Wilkison.    Another Yorkshire with “Halfpeney” typo, not in Atkins idk if it's an error, or a mule or something.

If you buy on ebay, druids_revenge sells like 15-20 every week, great condition, but they tend to go super high. But I saw him with an auction of Derbyshire and a Rutland once (separate auctions), so he has some great stuff once in a while. I got a silver Hampshire A#58 (the guy with the feathered helm) from him for $60

The one I buy a lot from for cheaper prices but still good quality is catocinrarecoins - he has like 20+ conders a week and a lot of US coins.        A few months ago, some seller had a Linlithgowshire conder for $50, before I realized it was a conder someone bought grrrrr so mad at myself   >:(

Here's my personal favorites:

Two half-crowns from Warwickshire

King's County 13-pence: the condition is pretty illegible but I was super surprised when I saw it on ebay at all, had to immediately get it so it didn't share the fate of Linlithgow lol

I have 13 pages of UK coins, including these three

of which those have some of my Conders (1787-1797) and

also Currency Tokens (1798-1816) as well. Plus a few Evasion tokens.

I still have rather a lot that are not on here yet, and currently have no time to

create a page. I do have some Wilkinson but not looked at them in a while.

I have bought from that druids seller before - so some of mine came from there.

See his picture below - I still have it from when I bought that token.

Five years ago I created this page, for a token I have with a GOAL spelling error >

 N#109495

where the modern jail spelling used to be gaol many years ago.

In the East of England, in the county of Suffolk, is a town called Lowestoft.

I have this - also created five years ago - and is a Currency Token >

N#110197

I also have this lovely Conder Token, from the same town. It does not yet have a page >

‘1795 Suffolk Lowestoft Conder Halfpenny D&H 37’

Ah that photo is from druids revenge nice lol. I also have the GOAL typo (Atkins Not Local #109).

I’m trying to cut on buying coins lately but I just got the first Wiltshire ever for under $20
