Need help identifying these countermarks. Didn't see them listed here. A buddy asked around at a couple other forums but didn't find an answer. Anybody recognize these?

Hello ─ I am very suspicious of their authenticity. Indian rupees are constantly defaced with fake Arabic or Arabic-like countermarks, and I see them all the time on eBay. There is a possibility that these are authentic, but I doubt it. Still, I can read them.

The first says this: شراكة المانيا سنة ١٢٠٧ = “partnership Germany year 1207”.

The next one has twice the letter “sin” interlocked (س = “s”).

The last one has the letters “sin” and “ta'” (ت = “t”).

Thanks for the lightning fast reply!

I very much appreciate the translation.

As for authenticity, I acquired these coins from a reputable collector so I believe they're real.

I'll leave this thread open and give other members time to view and comment on authenticity.

Again, thanks so much for the translation!

I agree, the countermarks look too clean, and the surface of the host coins looks suspicious.

Indeed, the surface and patina are typical of fakes.

Now I just had a further look online for the legend “شراكة المانيا” and here is what was probably used as a model. One notes that the date should have been 1307 (١٣٠٧) not 1207 (١٢٠٧). This is further evidence that it's just a fantasy.

Based on the coin just linked, it translates as “DEUTSCH OSTAFRIKANISCHE GESELLSCHAFT” (only the bold is actually translated). See also Krause's World Coins 1801-1900 under German East Africa. NB: If it was an official countermark it would be listed by Krause, but it isn't.

So are you thinking they are contemporary counterfeits or modern counterfeits?

I have a bag of counterfeits, mostly Fat Man dollars but also a Morgan, etc etc. so these wouldn't be my first fake coins.

I still appreciate the translations and opinions. Leaving the thread open for more comments.

My next coin show is several months away so I can't have these authenticated any time soon…

They are certainly modern counterfeits because of the artificial patina. Also, they don't seem to have circulated at all after having been countermarked. This is typical of the modern fake countermarks I see all the time on eBay.

In addition, I'm thinking that the coins themselves are Chinese copies. You may want to check their metallic composition and weight. Look at the field on the obverse of the first coin. This certainly doesn't look authentic, but I'll be interested to know what others think.

A strange thing is the doubling of “ONE” on the reverse of the first coin. In addition, this doubling is found only in the area damaged by the countermark!

Though the photos are not clear enough, it looks like the surface of the legends and delicate design parts is grainy. If so, this would be a strong indication that the dies were produced by electrolysis. Dies thus produced have a grainy surface. It is easy to polish the surface of the dies (= field on the coin) but not the incused parts of the design (i.e. those parts which are raised on the coins, therefore incused on the dies).

This is all very suspicious. Let us know if the weight and metal is OK, and if you can produce high def pictures, that would help.
