The Katanga province had but a fleeting moment as the power vacuum left by the British was filled. Biafra, Katanga and others tried to make the bigger nations respect the smaller ones. Had they been successful Africa would not be in the mess she is in today, where politics revolve around "let's steal whitey's stuff then live on foreign aid". How did that bedevilled continent go from Jomo Kenyatta and Ian Smith to Robert Mugabe and FW De Clerk?
My heart breaks for Africa.

You're right Phil, they drive the white farmers etc away and it's a right state now, it's mega corrupt though, my uncle used to work all over the world and he was in Africa during the band aid and all that (the original one) he used to come back every other month and say the ships are still there.. The govt wouldn't let the aid workers offload it without giving them 2 boxes for every one to the people who needed it, all the colonial powers should feel guilty at what they have done placing people like Saddam Hussein in power and giving Osama Bin Laden weapons to fight the Russians and building all those caves they can't find anymore (the ones that Elvis, Shergar, and Michael Jackson currently reside).
I know America weren't really a colonial power but they have gone a different way about it.. Just look at Vietnam - if it wasn't for American companies employing people they would have nothing!
