Hello,
I'm completely new to coin collecting, and have SEVERAL questions I really hope to find answers for, but most important is my 1oz Silver Eagles. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
I purchased a total of 10-1oz American Silver Eagle coins…back in 2019.
Sadly, they have began to have black spots & discoloration. I thought leaving them in the little plastic, air-tite, sealed bags they arrived in, along with the corrugated box between thick, dense foam inside an Army ammo box on top of a tall book shelf in my bedroom would be a safe and sufficient (protective) way to store them, I keep my home at 68° most of the time, I was obviously wrong!
I'm wondering if there is a safe way to get the black spots off of these coins? The company said don't try to clean them. I had purchased 2 air-tite DIRECT-FIT cases for 2 coins but sadly they weren't snapped completely so those 2 coins have began tarnishing on the outer edge. I just recently bought direct-fit air-tite cases for the other I coins.
If I can't remove the black spots I'm also wondering what kind of value depreciation I'm looking at approx., if there is a way to tell?
I'm also would like to know everyone's opinion on just how I should store these coins. If I keep them in the air-tite cases should they also be kept in some other special container? I had only taken them out to look at them a couple of times since I had bought them and only noticed a slight change in color on 2 of the coins until this last time and I was shocked! Also, can the DIRECT-FIT air-tite cases be opened once snapped or will that cause damage to their seal?
On another note, I have a 1 gram bar of platinum and a 1 gram bar of palladium and I've kept them in the little folded unsealed, I believe they are called “coin slips” or “flips”?? Is this safe for these metals, for long term?
Finally, I'm also getting ready to begin examining my “years” worth of saved coins for errors. I have several large containers filled with quarters, dimes, nickels. Then I have several full of pennies. Can anyone recommend a simple and organized way to go about this that can help to make it a more speedy process, and the best source that shows actual errors and the dates to look for????
I apologize for so many questions I hope this is not considered offensive.
Again, I really appreciate any answers, advice…
Happy I found this resource!!!
Thanks,
bhschoolu2 🙂
