Tonight the party begins! Europeans, Isrealies and Australians assamble!

Who do you think qualify from the semifinal to the final?

Who do you think win?

Who do you like the most?

Personaly I useally hear the songs for the first time at the live show, but Finland seems to be the favourit amongst my friends, here in Denmark. But looking at the politics, culture and general voting pattern it also make sense.

For those watching the show: Good luck to whatever country you support!

I have a soft spot for origami paper cranes.
Read or watch about "Sadako Sasaki and the Thousand Paper Cranes".

I'm too old to bother. 😴

Even though we watch the final every year. 🥳

A good excuse to sip whisky while listening to and watching the performers. The musical level has increased since the voting system was changed a few years ago.

Ah Eurovision! We used to enjoy watching it on BBC, just to listen to Terry Wogan's commentary!

Back in those days, the best song would generally come second! My favourite song of all time remains Nuku Pommin.

I have to admit that I gave it up some years back, though we occasionally have a look at the final.

Just listened to this song - very catchy tune….

Performing the final in Kyiv might have been a bit difficult, but would have been such a beautiful symbol...

And the perfect target.

I just have to reply because now I know a person who loves the song Nuku Pommiin, which was Finnish (I'm from Finland) song. Riki Sorsa got zero points totally, if I don't remember wrong. That was not my favourite at that time. I enjoy watching Eurovision Song Contest, almost every year, as does our children too. I'm not fan of those nice ballads, I like more rock style songs, like Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi.

Yes - Lordi won it for Finland! Hyvää Suomi and all that [=Go Finland]

I always thought that Nuku Pommin deserved more than zero.

Songs in less common languages tended to not do so well in the Eurovision.

Now many songs are in English, which favours them to some degree, I think. And I think that ballad type songs also tend to do better in general.

I agree with you on the song types - I am more a fan of songs like Afrikka Sarvikuonojen Maa. Eppu, the best!

So I present to you "Girls", it is an international composition of "Slavic" girls.

And don't turn your nose up, most of you have a great, great, great grandmother who was a slave imported from the east- They were hunted here and transported to the west because they were beautiful and they are pretty, nothing has changed to this day.

( I wanted to put it on my coin as well - it just didn't fit there anymore - not because it was made that wide, but the coin was small)

An intriguing tale related to Eurovision.

Some people I know love it, but I have always found it incredibly tacky and silly.

The musical performances is marginal and there seems to be a range of English and French language mangling songs in ESOL, ETOL (English as a third language) and EOOL (English as another language) from places like Moldavia and Azerbaijan.

With Australia and Israel its not even Eurovision. I mean why is there such a fuss over this, I mean there is no way any of tehse acts would even be taken seriously by the music industry, its just a silly drunken party.

Our news had an item, saying that we in New Zealand should enter, now that Australia is in (Possibly as most people here are of European descent, but our country is so woke, they would send a Maori or Pacific contender to do some inane rap about how bad colonisation and racism is). They also showed a Croatian entry which was like a mix of Borat Bondage Bikers in underpants - hilarious yes, but the musical performance was marginal at best.

It's time to can this camp relic to history, I think the rest of the world laughs at it. Most of the camp and marginal performances are from East Europe and the semi Asian Muslim places like Azerbaijan. It was a lot better before 1990, when it was just Western Europe and the rules were, you had to sing in your native language, which stopped a rash of entries in English and French.

Before 1980, only the UK, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta could sing in English and the last 2 had governments at the time, who were very anti English (Malta's first 2 entries in 1971 and 1972 came dead last, but their 3rd in 1975 which was very ESOL got in the middle, in 1991 when they returned, it was nearly always English and they did better).

If anything I would like Malta to win for once as they have never won but got 2nd a few times. Failing that Ireland, as its the Euro country I feel closest to.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Eurovision is mostly for young people (and people who regard themselves as being young), and then again sometimes there is this very nice tune that stays listenable even after many years. If I need to recollect how my music taste was like when I was young, I just have to browse my vinyl records. Some of those tunes are utter trash, but I liked them when I was a teenager.

There are quite a few reasons why Australia has been at Eurovision for the past few years.

Firstly, there is a huge European diaspora population who emigrated from Australia.

Secondly, Special Broadcasting Service has been licenced to be involved - & has aired Eurovision since 1983.

I don't know why the hell the Pirate State of Israel is even allowed in Eurovision - considering that it has one of the worst human rights records in the world along with Azerbaijan, Syria, North Korea, Belarus, China, & Russia.

You're partly right, even here not all people have to, I'm the only one in the whole family who watches it. The wife has taste, she doesn't want to see it.

I am, as the boss already said, an emotional bomb, with comedic taste, I'll be happy to see it.

But also understand another dimension of Europe-I live in the mountains and 150 km from my house they speak a foreign language, Polish, their costumes have thousands of years of history.

50 kilometers southwest of my house is Austria, completely different language, different culture, different costume.

30 kilometers east of my house is another border,, Slovakia,, -the language is similar to many other words, but we understand it, however, temperament and habits are different.

Hungary is 180 kilometers away from my house, a different language, a different culture

We are Europa - simply "Circus"

And we still regularly shoot each other and do each other wrong, and that's why they decided to create the EU  - this is one of the main reasons for sharing with each other without borders with free access to the economy.

This is to prevent mutual attacks - "someone wisely decided it was better if we drink and have fun, sing songs as you like and show off our costumes and culture. - it's better than killing each other ( of course, this is not always the case with us, unfortunately there are exceptions) however, it's not in the EU, that's the brake.

The World Hockey Championship has already started in our home - also a form of games -we are just people, entertainment and sports have accompanied us for thousands of years.

Ready with 4 centiliter of Talisker and a rocker glass - just one cl an hour during the entire show. 🧐

My douze points goes to Loreen. 🥳

Exactly what the grown-ups have been saying all along. 💋

Yes. The Eurovision was a part of the post-war European Project (starting out as part of the European Coal and Steel Community) which set out to get European countries to cooperate in peace by learning about each other and having a bit of fun with each other.

It largely worked, with some help from NATO, - 76 years' of peace in Europe 1945-2022. Correct me if I am wrong here, but I think that is the longest continuous period of peace in Europe since the Roman Empire.

In our present internet age, and with cheap flights, we have many more ways of interacting and learning about each other available (numista, for example, and numismatics in general). But the Eurovision is still a good way to have a laugh while doing it.

Even Norway won it one year!

Surprisingly many of the songs have text in their own language - Portugal, Serbia (partly), France, Spain, Albania, Italy, Finland, Czechia (partly), Armenia, Moldova, Slovenia and Croatia - 12 out of 26. There are only 3 or 4 songs that I would not vote for at all.
