English-speaking (and Spanish-speaking 🙁) members now see the item modification page with English legends and values. They can select values in language-independent fields, and can fill with English texts the language-dependent fields.

And French-speaking members see this page with French legends and values. They can select values in language-independent fields, and can fill with French texts the language-dependent fields.

In the “Documentation center”, members with permission to edit help articles can edit all three versions of each article (English, French and Spanish) at the same time, on the same page.

Why not do the same on item modification page?

  • display the interface in the member language interface (labels, menu, language-independent values),
  • display the language-dependent fields for three languages (or two, if the Spanish can not be added now).

For example, with English interface the page will be similar to:

The user will be able to fill in the fields in the languages they know.

This solve these topics:

If this can be easily done, perhaps the Spanish support would be more easy to add, later.

Before do this, may be must convert some language-dependent fields to language-independent fields:

Edit: I modify the subject text.

The page gets more cluttered as more languages are supported. There was just a call for volunteers for German, Italian and/or Portuguese.

Yes, it is possible, I am sure.

Can be added a link Show/Hide near these fields and by default:

  • hide all except English fields,
  • hide all except the fields in the languages of the user…

As third option, please consider:

  • hide all except original language fields.

I am not understand “the original language field”: The language only can be one language of the interface (English, French, or Spanish, at this moment).

That's the problem. We have to recognize the language associated with the coins and notes so that the real names can be given, not just “translations”.

You are refering to the “Translation of the lettering” fields of obverse and reverse. See https://en.numista.com/forum/topic126722.html

I am not refering to the language of the item (coin, banknote or exonumia). I am refering to the language of the page of the item.

The page of the item can be modified in English or French interface. And this page has

  • language independents fields (composition, shape, tags...; usually they are list of options) and
  • language dependents fields (title, description, comments...;  they are text fields).

My suggestion is to show the language dependents fields in all languages (of the interface) in the same page (now we have a page per language), like the images of the first message.

I'm refering to all fields which contain the denomination and ruler's name. These need to be available in the original, un-translated forms.

I prefer see these in my language, but can be useful the original language in order to search unknown items.

Can be added one field more (English, French and original language) in these attributes.

I wanted this when Spanish was added, and think it more necessary as more languages are added, the work involved in editing items multiple times in additional languages becomes unnecessarily time consuming when it could be all in one place.

No reason to overly-clutter the current single language modify page, it can easily be a separate page…

Very good idea! I'd add a “duplicate (all languages)” option which would be of great help! It would open a creation page with all languages open and filled with existing info that we can update

I like the idea of editing options. The option chosen by the edit pen in the upper right of the page could be in user settings.

If the option to edit in a subset of all languages is added (say, everything except Russian) then the default setting for a user could be enhanced to handle that.

Even nicer would be the option to change the edit language settings during an edit – allow adding or removing the French fields. (Obviously you wouldn't be able to turn off French if you have modified a French language field.)
