Tourist souvenir value

I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a value to my tourist souvenir. N# 82289 Smithsonian institution 1903 wright flyer. It has a 994 rarity index

The rarity index only applies to Numista. It is based on how many members have added it to their collection. Here is a link that will explin it better.

To address the question:

1 - Value. No, probably not much in value. The Numista page doesn't list composition, but it looks like a fairly cheap metal. I.e. There's no intrinsic value as it's not gold, silver, etc.

2 - Rarity - These tokens were probably made in the tens of thousands as fun little souvenir pieces for tourists. So, there's probably a lot of them already out there! Whilst it's “Rare” on Numista, that only applies within the Numista user base. In other words, only a handful of users on this site actually have this token. But when you realise most people don't have Numista accounts (or even if they do, might not register a souvenir token), that sort of explains the “Rare” rating. The link provided by JLHare covers this in more detail.

I would genuinely be surprised if it was worth anything at all. Souvenir tokens don't tend to be valuable anyway. Indeed, they're deliberately designed as cheap tokens you can buy, then look back at & get that trip down memory lane remembering where the token was from.

Yeah, I have to agree… I never set out thinking “Golly, I think I need to collect tokens and pressed pennies” - yet, both have found me. My automatic valuation of said items is £0. They might increase in the event that the business wants them back for a museum/exhibition, but the odds of that are slim to none.

As far as Numista goes, it took me ages after I joined and catalogued most of what I had to find that you could catalogue tokens, medals, trolley tokens and things like that… I doubt most people are dedicated enough to search the site long enough to find everything they can potentially catalogue everything that has happened across them.

Exonomia was a hard fought addition to Numista, not that long ago.  some of my favorite pieces are worth $1. or less.

I also have made a 180 on Franklin Mint silver novelties. I scoffed at such things sold to silly grandmas, when I was a yungun. - now Im a grampy, I realize that was a dam good price for good silver and wish they had bought em all for me then. but - of course , not let me know they had done so until after my 33 birthday…🤐

Just be aware that we in the UK had a problem with the availability of everyday coinage at the end of 1700s and into the early part of the 1800s.  That resulted in the widespread use of ‘Conder Tokens’ as standard coinage.  We also had various businesses issuing their own low value coins/tokens in the 1800s as a means of ensuring customers would return for further purchases.

See below - I added this to Numista a while back…

Also, I remember watching an antiques programme some time ago and someone had collected a whole album of these tokens/coins, with a face value of no more than 1d, 1/2d, 1/4d.  They were then estimated for sale at £10 a piece - and someone paid even more than that !

Maybe not as worthless as you might think !!!

I found this in a bag of coins last year, which I believe also has some value nowadays…
