HELP. Trying to find out about this German medal from WWI or before

7 berichten • 146 keer bekeken

I have owned this medal for many, many years, but have never been able to find out exactly what it was issued/awarded for. Have spent quite a few hours over time, and all of this morning, again, with no luck, so as always, have turned to the experts. My German is rubbish, but I do know that Kriegs means war. The lettering is very confusing when trying to add to a translation page and the four capital letters between the Maltese cross type design, must mean something too, but no idea in which order to put them.

All help gratefully received as always

Geoff

Nice one, here is a site with some very detailed information in german:

Ehrenkreuz 2.Klasse des Preußischen Landes-Kriegerverbandes (ehrenzeichen-orden.de)

Rough translation (by Google):

Cross of Honour 2nd Class of the Prussian National Warriors' Association

The Prussian State Warriors' Association endowed the Cross of Honour for its members on 16 August 1921 in 2 classes. The award had to be applied for by the individual warrior associations to the state executive committee. The 2nd class was awarded for outstanding services to the warrior associations of the Prussian State Warriors' Association. Previous possession of the 2nd Class Cross of Honour was a prerequisite for the award of the 1st Class. A simultaneous award of both classes was not intended. Both classes were carried on together. The reason for the award could be a special individual act or many years of loyal service to the PLKV. A minimum period of 10 years was required for the 2nd class. Exceptions were made for members over 70 years of age. The ratio for the 2nd class was set at 10% of the members. From 1 August 1925, awards were made free of charge from the budget. In the event of death, the awards had to be returned, but could be purchased by the surviving dependants. In the event of misconduct, the cross could be revoked and had to be returned. The costs for replacement crosses and probably also for purchase by the surviving dependents amounted to 4 RM for the 2nd class. Crosses were made of different materials such as bronze or silver-plated white metal. The differences lie, among other things, in the different weights.

Silver-plated cross made of bronze with slightly curved cross arm ends. Front and back with round medallion. Segments with letters between the arms of the cross. On the upper arm of the cross an eyelet with a small ring and a band ring. On the eyelet the maker's mark H.Timm Berlin.

Obverse:

Between the arms of the cross the squiggly letters - P - L - K - V -.
In the centre shield surrounded by a border with pearls the 5-line inscription:
- For - merit - in - the - warriors' association - being -.
Reverse:

Between the arms of the cross, mirror-inverted, the squiggly letters - P - L - K - V -.
In the central shield the Kyffhäuser monument with rays in the background surrounded by a small round border.
Ribbon:

28 mm wide, white borders 1 mm, black/white horizontal stripes.

This is how the medal now looks amongst the other WWI medals. I believe the ribbon is wrong. The medal in the top right is actually Hungarian.

I have two other WWI German medals but they are in there original boxes
