Overall help with banknote identification

6 berichten • 160 keer bekeken

I just inherited a large sum of antique money and wanted to find the value of the notes and coins, but don’t know how to do so. The one I started with was a One Pound note from the Bank of England. I was able to track it to the type of note ( N#202927 ) and even the date (1970-78) because of the Chief Cashier signature ( J. B. Page). I thought this might be a good place to learn how to identify it further. Thank you in advance.

Without pictures, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you. Could you please post clear pictures of each side of your item?

Hello and welcome to Numista!

Here's a good place to start:

https://en.numista.com/help/how-much-is-my-coin-banknote-or-piece-of-exonumia-worth-31.html

This website isn't listed but is a good place to get an idea of values:

https://www.pmgnotes.com/priceguide/world-note-price-guide.aspx

Antique coins are quite difficult to identify (countless similar variants often in bad condition), if you mean just a few centuries old (not really antique) it's much easier. Just try to find out the issuer/country most often prominent on younger coins and banknotes of all ages. From there cut down the hits with numbers/values denominations, any other text you can see or dimensions (diameter, weight, width/height etc.).

Examples from the random selection on the Numista homepage:

Coin

N#14877

I would search: 1868 Isabel II (query) and scroll down or by adding the diameter, more text etc. reduce the hits even further

Banknote

N#206090

10000 Brazil and scroll or Banco central do Brasil 10000 cruzados or similar (query)

Keep in mind the more text (legends etc) you use for your search the more possibilities there are for wrong entered information that will lead to no hits (especially true for old coins with many text variants). So use as much as necessary as little as possible.

Then there is photo ID next to the  + Filters that can help you with languages you can't read the text of.

Lastly there are the fora for help identifying coins/banknotes if you are really stuck. Provide good pictures and as much information as possible.

Hi! Sorry, but I forgot pictures.

That £1 note is quite common, and would be worth very little over its face value.

Have a look for prefixes using letter M, these are generally special notes used to replace errors in production. Often these notes could be worth more than standard prefix notes.
