1971 Franklin Mint silver-coloured coin token

8 berichten • 453 keer bekeken

I have been researching a silver-coloured 1971 Franklin Mint coin I bought and found this (N#180110) token in the catalogue. However, the listed coin is bronze and 7 grams. My coin is silver-coloured and weighs 23.59 grams.

The only other information I have found is here: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=88541

"i found out from another forum These were minted as samples to show the coinage quality.

1969: 39mm Gold on Sterling Proof mintage 50. Nickel Silver Proof Like mintage 5252.
1971: 39mm Sterling Proof 1000, Proof-Like 28,050. Nickel Silver 2650. Franklin Bronze Proof 1500, Proof-Like 9000." from user 08curranc.

I've contacted the Franklin Mint through the website but have had no response.

Attached are below is my coin for reference. I suppose I'll need to do a SG test to definitively confirm the composition. The lot I received this coin in also contained a carded 1971 FM Charter Member medal so not concerned with authenticity.

Does anyone have any information on this coin? Is there enough information to start a new page in the catalogue?

Hello and welcome to Numista!

There is also these in the Numista Catalog:

N#182616 1976 32mm and 26 mm, no weight, no composition

N#335326 1972 38.5 mm, 28.9 g, bronze

The Franklin Mint went belly up a while back. The brand name has been owned by several on-line sales companies.  I doubt you'll ever get information from them.

Thank you for the welcome. Long time lurker here.

I didn't know they'd gone under so I won't bother with any more follow ups!

Should have added the diameter is 38.7mm.

Anything on the edge?

Following information comes from the Franklin Mint Issues.

Special Franklin Mint Issues

These issues showed samples and specimens in different metals and with different finishes. Most had Benjamin Franklin on one side and the Franklin Mint Coat of Arms on the other.

Thank you. That's awesome. Much appreciated. 😄

It has a reeded edge, for posterity.

The book gives no information about the edges. But Franklin Mint frequently has reeded edges.
