Hello everyone,

I've got a banknote 500 rials from Iran.

Where the watermark is, on one side there is a beautiful colored “mark”?, otherwise the note is exactly the same as those without the “mark”.

Is this done for a special occasion or event?

Or has  someone been creative?

Thank you.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I believe this is ‘Home Made’. I do not know if this is against the law in Iran, but I bought one for a few dollars from a US seller some years ago. There are few such overprints on these kind of notes.

You might be able to find them on eBay as well.

Thank you for your answer.

I don't read Arabic so I thought the colorful mark meant something special.

I like it. (is beautiful done).

Regards, aniana.

Many groups and people add slogans and sayings to Iranian banknotes.  Sometimes you can see that with US banknotes as well.  They are not of an official nature.  And then there is the Philippines which love to add things officially to their banknotes.

Hello,

Thank for your info.

The strange thing is that the Iranian note seems to be as good as uncirculated with that “overprint”. That's why I wondered what and why.

On North Korean notes, I believe, one can also find overprints for an anniversary of some kind? I don't know if the Korean notes are official (with the overprint) or not? I supposed so because one can find them in the numista catalog.

Should one catalog the Iranian note with “overprint” as a banknote or as exonumia?

Thank you. Many regards, aniana.

It's technically a damaged banknote…exonumia is a possibility.

Received a reply from someone from Iran : “These are private overprints made for various religious occasions. They are sometimes made to order, other times people buy existing stamps and apply them themselves. The notes are then given as gifts.”

Last comment is correct--used as entry tickets for special religious events

here are some of mine

Beautiful.

Thank you.

Not as good looking as your copy though- i bought for $1US each when I was there in 2013  ($1 was worth 36,000 Iran rial )

face  value of notes is only 100 rial , so the banknote shop did well out of me

Funny thing  the majority of coin and banknotes shops ( including street vendors) are all in one small region of Tehran

If you want say Car tyres the shops are also in one district and open 24hrs a day!!!! and it is the same for most purchases

Nothing has a price on it, and i think they base sale price on whether you are local or tourist

I have a nice collection of Pre- Revolution notes that were quite expensive, and well over Catalog price
