Help to identify Fals from the Umayyad(?) era [opgelost]

3 berichten • 109 keer bekeken

Hello,

Some time ago I found this coin. It was said to be a Fals from the Umayyad era. It was estimated to be around AH80.

The structure is the same as many other similar coins, but what I found a bit different is the annulets on the reverse, at least I have not found so many other Fals without annulets on the obverse but instead on the reverse. I have found none on Numista. However, this small difference is not enough to add it to the catalogue so I was asked to check with the community if you can help me to identify this coin?

It seems to be some text in the margin of the obverse, but I have difficulties reading it.

On the reverse I can clearly see 5 annulets between two concentric circles but if assuming they are evenly distributed there would probably be 8 of them. I cannot see any signs of text in the reverse margin.

Weight 5,01 grams

Thickness is about 1,5 mm

Diameter is about 20 mm at the longest distance and 18 mm at the shorter distance.

I have attached some photos taken by my mobile phone. I hope they are good enough.

Thank you.

Best regards

Those coins are hard to identify because the information about the mint, if present, is in the margin, and not always visible.

Even renowed catalogs like Mitchiner do not list variants of design, weight and size, since there are too many.

You can find more than 2600 on Zeno, a broad variety:

https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=2349

I see Numista uses mint as criteria to a separated entry but there are few anonymous fals with no mint:

Example: N#354459

I do not know if Numista will add every single type in the catalog, I remember years ago there were like just 3 entries of AE Fals and now there is a lot, but for sure there are hundreds yet missing, some coins will also be unique since the coin making process were a die could be made each day, and the descentralization of minting created a huge amount of varieties.

Thank you for the answer.

Based on your answer and the fact that there are no more answers I assume that the identification will be difficult.

From you answer I also understand that in case I want to register this one as part of my collection I should find any of the pages of anonymous fals and register it there, right?

I will leave this post open for a while just in case someone has not seen it yet. Not everybody visit Numista every day like I do. 🙂
