Charles I half groat

6 berichten • 81 keer bekeken

Hi

I bought this coin labelled as Charles I 2d 1640 to 1641 recently and on closer examination once home in front of Numista I noticed the coin is heavier than it should be 1.2g and has a star instead of the crown mark at the top (on both sides). I guess its either a fake or a different coin to the one it was labelled as. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Ah, I see SP#2832 has a star, so perhaps it is a genuine coin.

Different mintmarks exist for the English King Charles I 2 Pence coins.

King Charles I's coins are a very specialised field in themselves.

Aidan.

Thanks Aidan

Would 1.2g be normal for this coin? Were the weights reliable back then? Or did they vary?

They varied, as the planchets were prepared by hand ready to be hammered with the dies to strike the coins.

Aidan.

Thanks Aidan, very useful to know.
