Chinese cash coin or reproduction?

Hi, I've recently acquired a coin that I think is probably a souvenir reproduction of a Chinese cash coin but im having trouble identifying it.

It is c.3cm in diameter, non magnetic, with one side being plain and the other having Chinese characters on. It looks very similar to this coin ( N#212892 ) but I obviously don't think its that old, which is why I'm leaning towards reproduction/fake. Any help interpreting the characters and identifying the coin much appreciated.

It exists in copper/bronze

Then you can see the difference in calligraphy which is square on your coin (like a typewriter 🤪) and the size is a way too large …

And you are right, coins over a thousand years old are not as well preserved.

Xhich does not necessarily imply that used coins sold for a few euros by Aliexpress or Taobao are genuine 😁

Characters follow each other clockwise. It's well documented in the Numista coin sheet.

The reign of the emperor Renzong was long, more than forty years (1022- 1063). This reign is divided into nine eras.

This coin was minted during his era: Tiansheng :1023-1032

I think it’s a genuine. The toning and script look great and actually it’s not necessary to make a fake one, Because this coin (genuine) usually costs 1$ or 2$.
The script on  the coin is “天聖元寶” , it’s a period in “北宋”(Northern Song Dynasty) and the emperor is “宋仁宗” .

This coin also been made by copper, so don’t worry, it has highly possibility that it’s genuine.

It's the cost in China, but you can't export them !

如你所见,中国关于禁止古钱币出口的新闻报道,每年类似的这种报道层出不穷。前几年还可以送钱币去外国评级,现在也不行了。

I've just checked it and realised i measured the diameter wrong - it is in fact 25mm, i misread my tape measure (not enough coffee this morning haha). So it is the same size as the genuine article. But it feels very rough to the touch, not worn as I'd expect a thousand year old coin to be. I bought it in a mixed lot of Asian coins from eBay, the rest being modern, so a reproduction seems most likely. Thank you very much for helping me confirm the identification :)

I see “top of Bao slanted” which leads to H#16.74 when the overall shape of Bao looks like H#16.73.

And Bao is too tall and large.

Other characters are too square compared to the Hartill.

I wouldn't trust this coin.

But let's wait for other opinions, we have quite a few specialists in Chinese coins on Numista! 😜

Hello

Agree with Frenchlover

And the Tian seems to be closed on the two side

not referenced in the dictionary of Northern Song currencies

and also the connection in the yuan

Hi,

I don't think the bao is slanted as 16.74 shown a “curvy cap”.

I tend towards 16.73.

Coin looks authentic, they are overall common as far as copper cash goes

- Verifying your Asian and British-territorial coins everyday with the best quality photos and the best information.

Check out my Facebook, Kenneth Gucyski.

The majority of experts on this website (I'm not an expert) give an opinion that your coin has a reasonable reason to be authentic so you can create a listing for your coin, but make the effort to purchase a precise scale to the hundredth of a gram, please, it's not so expensive.

As you are new, you may think that it's complex to create a page but it's not :

- Go to the page : N#212892

- Go to the bottom of the page and select “Duplicate this page”

- Then change the title :

1 Cash - Tiansheng Yuanbao; Seal script

- Enter precise weight and diameter, and change the reference : Hartill# 16.73

- Lets comment as it, and place your pictures. I've put in form your pictures :

- The date is :

- Then at the bottom enter a comment : “Yeah, it's my first page !”

The referee will analyse and validate your sheet afterwards 😃

not sure I accept it

 too contentious

The coin itself is not an expensive coin. I have some examples but they are not that nice pieces, not even close. In addition to the condition also the color (green) is a bit suspicious. I have attached a photo from a book called Northern Song Dynasty cash variety guide by Norman F. Gorny. As you can see there are many varieties, totally 21 in Seal Script. The photo does not cover them all, but as you can see there is also a square bei variation. In summary it is not possile to say for sure that this coin is authentic. The attached photos are not good enough for that.

Thanks so much for the help! Ill have to try and do more research on this coin and perhaps try to find a local expert who could examine it in real life. I'd love to believe it's that old, I'm just sceptical due to the condition. I don't know anything about Chinese coins so I've got lots of reading to do! I had no idea there could be so much variation in the characters, or that a coin so old could be quite common. I'm very new to coin collecting on the whole so lots to learn! For now I think I'll keep it in my “dubious” collection until I can say for sure. Thanks so much!

这枚钱币看起来是真的,这种钱币在中国本土也就售卖0.5美元完全没有造假价值,而且这枚钱币的铸造量非常多。

有什么需要的可以和我说【仅限1950年以后的纪念币和纪念钞】
