Ragusa Follaro?

Hello,

I have dug up this coin.

It has given me the best clue: RAGUSA

Makes complete sense as it was found near Dubrovnik.

My research would suggest that this coin is pre 1600s as coins after this century virtually all Ragusa coins have St Blais on them.

This coin clearly depicts entrance to the city, which the closest reference photo on here I find is a “follaro type 3" ~ 1452-1612. It does state that a type 1 and 2 precedes this pictured coin, however there are no reference pictures….

The weight is very close to Type 1 (.72) and the dimension is indeed 15mm

The reverse of the coin does not offer much more help other than “ragusa” again with a few extra letters.

Could this in fact be the Follaro type 1?

I don't have a catalog for coins of Ragusa but it looks like this one: https://www.ma-shops.com/raffler/item.php?id=30523&curr=USD

Hi Andy,

Indeed, quite similar, unfortunately that listing doesnt offer any more info than I already have. :(

Thanks for that link though :)

Cheers

Oh Dear, that one dates in within a 500 year period which is not accurate nor helpful but thanks for the lead. :)

I have the Krause catalogues from 1600-1800 and your coin is not in them, So pre 1600s is my guess. The date they mention is probably for the republics existence, not coin issue date.

Yes, thats what I had initially mentioned as per St Blais not being present.
