Martinique banknotes from the 19th century [opgelost]

Hello everybody!

I wanted to consult my colleagues about some of the first issues of Martinique banknotes (still from the 19th century) that are not yet registered here in Numista. I was going to request inclusion, but I had doubts about the pick codes used.

There are inconsistencies between pick codes (used by SCWPM) and sites like Bank Note Museum and Colnect. Below are some examples.

Images above from Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (SCWPM) 1368-1960, 16th edition (2017)

Five Francs 1863

SCWPM: P#2B // BNM and Colnect: P#A3

One Franc 1884

SCWPM: P#3 // BNM and Colnect: P#2

Two Francs 1884

SCWPM: P#3B // BNM and Colnect: P#3

I don't know why there are code differences, unless there is some version other than the 16th edition of 2017 (which is the version I have here at SCWPM) with different codes!

If anyone could help with this issue or give an opinion on what code we should use (in advance, I think we should use what is in SCWPM), I would be grateful!

Sincerely,

Vladimir.

I would go with the SCWPM codes, since it is more official. What could have occurred is either Colnect or Bank Note Museum getting it wrong and the other copying, since they tend to have the same information and organisation. I’m certainly not an expert on banknotes from Martinique, but I would certainly trust SCWPM over Colnect/Bank Note Museum any time. I’m not aware of any newer versions of SCWPM than the 2017 version. The Banknote Book (TBB) might have more accurate information but I do not have a subscription to it so I cannot speak for it.

I would go with SCWPM. 16th ed, is the latest version that I have seen of it.

You could try searching the notes on ha.com, stacks bowers, or spink.com to verify the catalogue numbers - these are the auctioneers who are most likely to have handled the notes and who have an accessible archive of their past sales, though spink.com is a very difficult website to use.

Hi Daniel!

I think like you in using Pick codes as they are listed in SCWPM. I also don't have access to TBB. =/

Hi Martin!

At Heritage I didn't find banknotes from that period in Martinique (maybe I didn't look so hard).

But in CGB (https://www.cgbfr.com/boutique_recherche,NL052F159DCD625B.html), the numbers they are using are following the BNM and not the SCWPM!! This surprised me and made me open this forum here to ask more people for their opinions!

I will wait for more opinions on this subject, but I am still in favor of using the pick numbering contained in the book. =)

Thanks!

Very tough/scarce notes from Martinique vladthiengo!  Congrats on owning those!

I would go with SCWPM P-codes b/c it was the first system & I don't see any advantage to the new system introduce by the Banknote Book TBB (which has since been bought by CAND/Greysheet).  All this new publication did was add more confusion with World listings IMO (even though I do realize they did improve on some descriptions/documentation).

There have been issues with the SCWPM since their data gathering/publications were never perfect. Cataloguing a nations series is a huge endeavour, the world's banknotes an even more colossal task (bound to get confusing at times). adanieluy started a thread on the mix up for a Colombian 10,000 Pesos a while back.  Nevertheless, it is the system most collectors have grown familiar with since the later TBB system was exclusive (involved subscriptions) etc.

I just did a quick search on spink.com

Not much came up, except these two, both identified as scwpm P2 and p2A respectively. No reverse images unfortunately – spink tended to not do them.
