There are depressions on the sides.

 Caused by a coin rolling machine badly adjusted. 

The coin at each end of the roll gets gouges when closing the paper roll.

 Rarity is for Mint error coins - not machine damage after the Mint.

If there is a new roll then it is not every coin in it like that - 

just the first and last. Even then only in faulty adjustment - 

most rolling machines do no damage. 

 So it a low possibility 

1 - to be at the end of a roll 

2 - the machine to be faulty also

Yes, that is exactly what it is and not a mint error.

Mystery solved! Thanks for the info. I actually think I'll keep it and label that in case I can help others.
