Does anyone know how to tell km849 and km849a apart without using a scale? Both types were made in 1981.
Even with a scale, a difference of 0.02 grams is a very small difference.

Is there any difference at all in the way they look?
Maybe this can help you

These are the pics from Numista, I hope this is OK for show an example.

Composition! 849 - Bronze and 849a - Brass
As a youngster, I like to find NZ pre-decimal and foreign coins that had made It's way into circulated coinage.

The thought of holding a object of the past with it's hidden history really intrigued me as a youngster...and still does.
I have a bag full of these. I'll check and see if I can tell them apart.
Thanks for your replies.

I have seen the pictures on the site, and the colour seem to differ. In real life, however, I cannot see any difference in colour. Bronze and brass looks quite similar.

If only the alloy changed and nothing else, is it only guesswork? Reasonably, every third should be bronze, and two thirds brass.
