From what I can see, it looks legit to me!
As a youngster, I like to find NZ pre-decimal and foreign coins that had made It's way into circulated coinage.

The thought of holding a object of the past with it's hidden history really intrigued me as a youngster...and still does.

No more than the "Indie" but if you're still unsure, there are some similar examples on Google images. No different from yours really.

I have coins from a similar era that show the same sort of preservation .
