Hi,

I came into possession of this token:

It is very similar to this listing: N#55761

Does anyone have any insight into what these were used for?

Walker’s produced wads for shotgun cartridges; in the days of the muzzle loaders a metal wad was used to separate the powder from the shot. This was changed later to cardboard and in modern cartridges plastic. I believe they are now changed again to felt/card.
Various sizes are known; the numbers relate to the shotgun bore.
Refs TCS Bull. Vol 6 no.4 page 145.
The wads shown date to after 1834 the date of the patent, No. 6634 for Walker’s patent metal shotgun wads, and were selling at one shilling per hundred around that time.

PJB.

Richard Walker of Birmingham England intialy made copper percussion caps for muzzle loading guns. His 1834 patent metal wads were not intended for shotshells, but muzzle loading shotguns., note that some have small indents around the edge to allow for escaping air when ramming down the barrel.

To carry on from what Jim said there are two patents on the Walkers discs “cards” the first had three (3) notches and the second had four (4). I am saying second as all the ones with four notches on I have or had, had a letter “B” after the bore size (see pictures).

If this actually made any difference I don’t know, these two came from the same tin! They are called Patent Metallic Gun Wadding.

Edited as the wording was bad.

From another forum.

Ahhh… Metallic un waddings!

Thank you so much.

Here's another link I found with the original box. https://finesportingcollectablesltd.co.uk/blog/percussion-caps-and-shot-what-size/

Since they are ammunition parts - I don't think they should be on Numista?
