Hi
Several issues are discussed, although the main one is Copyright. I also want to point out, that I spend little time on Forum (please don't no crucify me over this 😎), so I do not have a real impression of its capacity as a picture source.
I. Quality. As I see it, its good to add any page, as long as the picture is pretty OK (no true standard for "pretty"). I am sure sooner or later someone will update the better picture. Having more pages attracts more users to join and eventually to cooperate in betterment of the Catalogue.
II. Copyright. You never really know who is behind the picture, unless you take it by your self. Recently I added a picture from an Auction page (I don't want to name it here) and whoooooaaa other referee changed the source to something else. Even Auction houses cannot be trusted 100% these days, if I see this correctly. Picture Copyright is a permanent risk, so “Terms of use” have to address this properly in order to protect the interest of Numista and its sole purpose.
III. Forum pictures. I do not have a law degree, but I am fairly certain, that if the picture is posted on Numista Forum ("What is this worth" or “which country is this from”). I already wrote this: “ Such pictures could be used in the catalogue, you just simply add reference to the source, which is Numista Forum. You change your legal terms and that should be it. But I would use only those pictures, from which you can fairly and really point out, that these were made by an “amateur at home". This tends to show, that pictures were truly made by user and not copied from somewhere else.”
=> But I would like to change it to this - in such cases users who open these forum threads should be encouraged to open new pages by them selves.
Last year I have acquired many approvals from aukcije.hr web page (see here), which is Croatian web platform for selling all kinds of stuff (numismatics included). The potential here is awesome (already added around 1000 pages to Numista) and I have not even touched such web services in other countries (something for several lifetimes of work indeed)… I am not trying to steer away from Forum, but as stated these web pages also represent a treasure trove of pictures and data, and especially the coins, tokens, notes and coupons I never really thought that they exist!!!
