I suggest that Numista update the forum policy for all future forum posts. The policy would change that if a member posts a photo of an item not on Numista in the forums. After 90 days if that member has failed to create a page to that photo in the database (Coins, Banknotes or Exonumia) that it (the photos) becomes the property of Numista.

Maybe then some benefit can be gained from all these requests for information (Value) about items and then… Nothing. They disappear till the next request for information.

Would need to revise the ToU also.

Section 12.1. Ownership of Collectors’ intellectual rights

In the course of using the Platform, Collectors may display photographs, trademarks, logos, designs and other models (Content) belonging to them or to third parties.

Ok. Like I said, maybe then Numista can then benefit from the “What is this worth?” posts.

Nothing ever becomes the property of Numista…

That said, if the OP has ‘sent’ the images to Numista via the forum, they have essentially given Numista permission to display those images, I see no reason why someone else can't make a page and attribute the images to the OP.

Making the images the property of Numista would have legal implications, where Numista might actually become responsible for the content, instead of the authors. Instead, we could potentially have the images become free under one of the Creative Commons licenses.

Still, the copyright status (assuming the content is protected by copyright) would not be clear, as there is a significant risk that the pictures are not from the author of the message.

Do you often encounter the case when someone posts a question about a coin missing on Numista and you can't find a picture on the partner websites who authorize using their pictures on Numista? It's extra work to search a suitable picture, but the quality is probably much better than the kind of pictures usually posted on the forum.

I tend to agree with that.

Hi

Several issues are discussed, although the main one is Copyright. I also want to point out, that I spend little time on Forum (please don't no crucify me over this 😎), so I do not have a real impression of its capacity as a picture source.

I. Quality. As I see it, its good to add any page, as long as the picture is pretty OK (no true standard for "pretty"). I am sure sooner or later someone will update the better picture. Having more pages attracts more users to join and eventually to cooperate in betterment of the Catalogue.

II. Copyright. You never really know who is behind the picture, unless you take it by your self. Recently I added a picture from an Auction page (I don't want to name it here) and whoooooaaa other referee changed the source to something else. Even Auction houses cannot be trusted 100% these days, if I see this correctly. Picture Copyright is a permanent risk, so “Terms of use” have to address this properly in order to protect the interest of Numista and its sole purpose.

III. Forum pictures. I do not have a law degree, but I am fairly certain, that if the picture is posted on Numista Forum ("What is this worth" or “which country is this from”). I already wrote this: “ Such pictures could be used in the catalogue, you just simply add reference to the source, which is Numista Forum. You change your legal terms and that should be it. But I would use only those pictures, from which you can fairly and really point out, that these were made by an “amateur at home". This tends to show, that pictures were truly made by user and not copied from somewhere else.”

=> But I would like to change it to this - in such cases users who open these forum threads should be encouraged to open new pages by them selves.

Last year I have acquired many approvals from aukcije.hr web page (see here), which is Croatian web platform for selling all kinds of stuff (numismatics included). The potential here is awesome (already added around 1000 pages to Numista) and I have not even touched such web services in other countries (something for several lifetimes of work indeed)… I am not trying to steer away from Forum, but as stated these web pages also represent a treasure trove of pictures and data, and especially the coins, tokens, notes and coupons I never really thought that they exist!!!

Is this the type of error you're getting?

If so, the picture size is too large.

No message says (The file has not been correctly uploaded. I've posted these

pictures before and can't understand why they won't go through now.

I think you should create a new topic with this error. It looks better that way.
