US Quarter 1982 Mint Mark Error?

I have this 1982 US Quarter which has some sort of mint mark, could be a D or an S, but it's hard to read, wondering if you think it's a die error or just wear on the coin and it's got all dented out of shape. Thanks

Post mint damage (PMD) . Likely a P or D. S was a proof coin only and unlikely although not impossible to get it's way into circulation.  After 42 years of circulation, no one should be surprised at any deformities through circulation such as what is shown on your example.

Thanks, yeah that what I was thinking, until you get it under the microscope you don't realise how battered and scratched coins get sometimes.
