Help with IDing Iranian Coin circa 1800s

8 berichten • 84 keer bekeken

Hello, I'm reaching out for some assistance in IDing what I think is an Iranian coin. I researched on Numista but the coin's diameter  and weight is different from what's catalogue.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Including suggestions for reference material to further my research. Thank you!

Either your coins script or the photograph is back to front,

Vic

I can identify the mint as Tabriz with image corrected above, as l suspect you somehow posted them backwards,

reading down as Dar-al-sultanat zarb Tabriz,  sana (year) 1226 (1811)

other side al-Sultan bin Sultan Fath ali' shah Qajar    Size and weight required, Metal is silver?

It looks to be a Nowruz presentation coin marking the Persian new year https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coin_of_Fath-Ali_Shah_Qajar,_minted_in_Tabriz,_dated_1811-2._Treasure_coin_presented_on_the_occasion_of_Nowruz_celebrations.jpg

Quite large then, not seen one of this type before so might be scarce or rare. As added interest here is the colour translation as best as I could do with a shaky mouse 🤣 as is often common on Persian coins most of the diacritical dots on the letters are missing, al sultan is written twice so al sultan- son of al sultan

This is similar with 1229 year but all I can see on yours is the 12.

2 Rial - Fat'h Ali Qajar - Iran – Numista

THey all have the same date- 1226, on the coin posted here it's an odd shape and l made a bad job of colouring it in. The coin on Numista appears to have no ref to the claim it's 2 dinar was official standard currency, on the zeno database no such coin is listed

Thank you for the input. I really appreciate it! This is all good information. It didn't occur to me on  tracing the coin and breaking it down with color tracing font!  The next step is to get this coin slab and certified.  All the best!
