Nun & Cathedral medal of J.Jourdain?

6 berichten • 56 keer bekeken

Hello guys, Im new here on this forum, recently I've collected a medal signed “J. Jourdain”, but not sure if it's authentique or not.

On this medal shows a profile of a nun, and on the back shows a cathedral. The medal is with a diameter of 2.8cm, silver plated.

The inscription is hardly recognizable for me:
Head: O·L·U van HALLE-B·U·O-N·D de HAL·PPN
Reverse: DEDICACE·1410-1910·BERBWIJDINT
(Sorry maybe wrong, this is what I read)

Unfortunately I could not find any information on the internet. Would you guys please kindly share something about this medal?

I read OLV van Halle (Our Holy Lady of Halle) with on the reverse the Sint-Martinusbasiliek from Halle (Belgium). So definitely Belgian.

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

Merci!

No expert, I just recognized some familiar elements ;-)

If you want you can add this medal to our catalogue, probably under inauguration medals

Head: O·L·V van HALLE-B·U·O-N·D de HAL·PPN

Onze Lieve Vrouw van Halle - B.U.O. - Notre Damme de Hal - P.P.N. [no idea what the BUO and PPN would stand for, for sure some abreviation both in Dutch and French)]

Our Lady of Halle

Reverse: DEDICACE·1410-1910·KERKWIJDING

Consecration 1410-1910

The weigh and measure the medal and crop your pictures to add.

I contacted the local organisors of the yearly procession, let's see if we get more information.

regards (and welcome to numista!)

Thank you Bram for your help. I really learn something from your reply, and that’s definitely the fun of collection. For sure, I’ll add this to catalogue with the description you provided. Glad to do some slight work for Numista :)

Got some additional information from the local museum curator. The image is apparently not that of Our Lady. Als the additional text BVO and PPN mean Bid voor ons and Priez pour nous, meaning pray for us. Here the translated full answer:

This medal is known to us. It was indeed issued on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the consecration of the church in 1910 and was offered for sale as a souvenir of a visit to the church or a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Halle. The consecration of the church by Petrus d’Ailly, archbishop of the diocese of Cambrai (to which Halle belonged in ecclesiastical terms), however, took place on 24/2/1409 This medal was then available in various formats, such as in this case as a pendant that was covered on both sides. Currently, a similar medal is on display at the exhibition in our museum on the occasion of 800 years of the City of Halle ( https://www.halle.be/denast/nieuws/expo-van-akarova-tot-thevenet-halle-de-kunsten ). The medal was minted by Jules Jourdain (°Namur 30/12/1873 and + Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe 22/2/1957;). He made busts, statues (e.g. Justus Lipsius in Leuven), statues of saints and war monuments. He also designed at least 35 medals. (Reference in Piron on pg 1322). On one side we see the Sint-Martinus-Church with the Halle coat of arms (the church only received the title of basilica in 1946). On the back is the image, a profile of Aleidis of Holland. She donated the statue of Our Lady to Halle in 1267. ( https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleid_van_Holland). She was Countess of Holland but through her marriage also Countess of Hainaut, the county to which Halle belonged at the time in political terms. Through this donation, the city of Halle developed into a flourishing and prosperous shipping city to this day. The inscription says; OLV van Halle BVO (Bid voor ons) - Notre Dame de Halle PPN (Priez pour nous), an inscription that we often read on medals and other devotional items that were offered to the many pilgrims who came to Halle in honor of the Black Madonna.
