Hi, I am extremely new to the world of numismatics and recently came across this coin that has me stumped. It has written on its protective packaging ‘Travancore Copper Fanam’ but after going though the entire India Copper catalogue here on numistia.com, a few Coin ID apps and reddit I have not been able to match the symbols to any picture. Wondering if any of you would have an idea?

Diameter is about 6-7mm, I used an XRF tester to confirm it is indeed copper.

Definitely not from south India, both sides appear to have the same bit of script which gives no real clue as to it's origin. Tthe angular type of script suggests Sindh or similar area where small coins like this are usually silver

Reminds me the Habbarid (Sind) as Vic said

There are some coppers, but some are under questionable coins:

I have one very simmilar to yours

Thanks, Vic65 and Geison for your insight.  Went and looked though the Sindh catalogue and found some similar symbols on coins (1 Fals - Umar ibn Hafs Hazarmard al-Muhallabi - Sind – Numista and Fals - temp. Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik - "Al-Walid I" (Sarmin) - Umayyad Caliphate – Numista), but nothing matching 100% which is making me believe that it could be a fake.

I do not think is Umayyad
Looks very tiny, would be more Sind related

The same bit of script on both sides is odd so very likely it is a modern fake, read what Jan Lingen says on this zeno page of 40 questionable coins of Sindh

Vic

Thanks again Geison and Vic65 for the info and links. I found an Ebay listing of a Sindh 1/6 Dirham (🧭 INDIA AMIRS OF SINDH 1/6 DIRHEM c. 1030 B72 CM14-24 | eBay UK) which solidifies Geison's idea of it being Sindh, but again with the symbols being almost the same on both sides I do feel it is a fake. Thank you very much!

I think is Sind but I am not convinced is fake.

Zeno says is fake because “is not seen in museums and old catalogs”. But for me, that allegation is not sufficient.
