Help wanted with medieval silver [opgelost]

6 berichten • 77 keer bekeken

Hi,

Yesterday I got this beautiful medieval silver, which I already posted at the monthly additions' thread:

On the holder is written “Cologne (+- 1300)”, but searching here under Cologne (archbisphoric and city) showed nothing similar.

Measurements written at the holder are 0,65g and 18mm.

Thanks for reading.

Spain I assume??

One of the king Juans (IOhA on obverse); CASTELLE E LEGIONI reverse.

Added:  Maybe - N#145402

That's the one!

Thanks for the quick answer.

My searches were all wrong, first I was looking under Germany, and I was thinking the building was a cathedral.

I think it is (a cathedral), regardless of what any other descriptions say.

I have always thought it was this one:

So I was not the only one thinking on a cathedral.

Strangely, most of the other Castile coins clearly shows a castle, so I don't know why the building on this coin looks more cathedral than castle.

Other thing, this cathedral does not have a middle tower at the front, only the two at the sides.

As you know, cathedrals were built in stages, often with the towers built latest.  The Burgos cathedral was built between 1280 and 1500s, and the style of the towers is a later, elaborate gothic style, so perhaps when the engraver was looking at the church, those towers did not exist?
