If you could provide us with more details, that would be great, or even a photo. The main thing to check is weight and dimensions.
Circulation wear!
I get that, but where is the gap between the rim and the pearls? It is filled in.
Circulation wear.
I’ll explain a little more, the coin has been in circulation - excesive wear rubbing against other coins, this has worn down the metal and over many years redistributed some metal into the areas where there was originally no metal.
The pearls you talk about are still visible on one side, the side facing towards the centre of the coin - this is visible with the wavy patern near the rim, these were once the pearls on the coin.
Ok, thank you, never seen it like that before, that's a lot of wear!

that's a lot of wear!
Yes it is. Look at the lettering on the helmet: completely gone on your coin. So it's not surprising the pearls are also almost completely gone.

I think it is more accurate to say that wear removes small amounts of metal from the highest points of the design, leaving a surface which is less defined. Features like letters, rims, etc. become broader upon wear because of the geometry of the die-cutting process (draft angle). In this case the rim and the pearls have become so broad from wear that they have merged together.
Re-distribution of metal requires a higher force than the friction that occurs during normal circulation wear.
