Germany 2 Euro 2002 J — Die Crack from 4h to 8h on Reverse

5 berichten • 62 keer bekeken

This is a 2 Euro coin from Germany, minted in 2002 at the Hamburg Mint (mintmark "J").

On the reverse (German Federal Eagle side), there is a visible die crack running along the outer ring, approximately between the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions. The line appears slightly raised and crosses through multiple stars, following the curvature of the coin’s edge.

This defect is likely due to a crack in the die, which was filled with metal during the minting process, causing a raised line on the coin. There is no evidence of post-mint damage — the surface is smooth and the rest of the coin is in circulated but stable condition.

Details:

Country: Germany

Denomination: 2 Euro

Year: 2002

Mintmark: J (Hamburg)

Error type: Die crack (reverse, outer ring)

Position: From 4h to 8h

Condition: Circulated

Please let me know if this type of error has been reported in other 2002 J issues. I’d be grateful for any insight regarding its rarity or potential value. Thanks.

A die crack doesn't work that way. That's just a PMD (post mint damage). Someone deliberately or something accidentally cut into the coin leaving this gash.

Thanks for the reply.

Straightest die crack I've ever seen I think. Almost looks like someone ran a razor blade across it like this:

Ya beat me but I had to prove it to myself first.
