This is different from the Knights Hospitaller who really did rule territory and issue coins (Rhodes, Malta, etc.), or the Teutonic Knights or Livonian Order none of which are the subject of as much popular attention as today, but are much more important in numismatic history.
I agree that Crusader States coins are often advertised as “Templar Coins” because they have a cross on them, and are from the appropriate time and place.
