Another fake Eritrea 5 Lire?

6 berichten
I've been talking to an ebay seller about a coin that I suspected is fake, and he thought might be real. His high bidder refused to pay him, presumably after realizing it was all too good to be true (i.e. to get a $2000 coin for $75). The seller did test it for silver and his result was .8, which is the correct fineness for this coin.

Here are some scans. The details all seem perfect to me comparing to the NGC and Numista pictures of this coin. The weigh is .94oz vs .99 oz, so to me that seems like a large enough discrepancy to declare it a fake, but it's only 5% off so maybe the scale is not precise...

Does anyone see any other clues here that it's fake? I mean besides the almost perfect, incredibly rare coin. Does it look like "light relief" to anyone?

Thanks for your help and interest.

Check the edge and see if it's consistent.

Otherwise, you want to check for extreme details.

It's in Italian which I don´t really understand but maybe if you use Google translate. It's a page that describes the differences of the real thing and the famous fake.

For me it is a fake. The photos with a damned loupe obscuring the view and finding a random place on the coin to look at seems contrived rather than having a clearer look at the coin. Two scans would have sufficed with zoomed pictures of areas of interest. The underweigh would concern me as it is being passed of as UNC (pretty much) so why would it weigh less?

Great article. It suggested the edge as a likely way to spot a forgery, and I do think the one in the scans has fewer lines right at the edge compared with the Numista picture:

It's a 100% fake. I keep one struck with the very same dies for reference. Got it 25 years ago when I was just beginning my African collection.
This one doesn't even seem to be silver, though I've seen silver fakes made with the same die.

Here is the real coin from my collection for comparison

I collect coins and tokens which circulated in Africa from 18th century to 2000. I sell about 7000 illustrated world coins from http://www.avscoins.com.
