Sept. 8th 2025 - Three years since the accession Charles III - Coin Survey

Hello all,

I always check my coins for scarce dates or varieties, but since the accession of Charles III on September 8th 2022 I have been saving all coins issued under him, including 2023 Elizabeth II “transitional” issues (i.e. coins struck with her portrait in 2022-2023 while they were working on the King's portrait). I have not received in my change any of the 2022 $2 coin with the black ring (mourning), otherwise I would have included it.

So, here's how it looks in three columns (2023 / 2024 / 2025):

I wasn't going to flip them all, but since I had gotten this far, I though it would be a good idea to do so. It was also an opportunity to check that I had made no mistake. Why did I care? Because it will be interesting to compare this small sample with the official minting figures for 2023 and 2024 (which I will do later). It's too early for 2025 of course.

Here are the stats:

  • 2023 — 5¢: 4 / 10¢: 4 / 25¢: 10 / $1: 3 (1 E"R + 2 C'''R) / $2: 5 (1 E"R + 4 C'''R)
  • 2024 — 5¢: 9 / 10¢: 36 / 25¢: 22 / $1: 2 / $2: 6
  • 2025 — 5¢: 0 / 10¢: 2 / 25¢: 2 / $1: 0 / $2: 1

Few commems in this lot:

And if anyone would like to add the 2025 coins to this thread where any coin from Canada has yet to be listed, be my guest:

Here are the coins in the Numista catalogue:

1 Dollar - Charles in the name of Elizabeth

2 Dollars - Charles in the name of Elizabeth

5 Cents - Charles III

10 Cents - Charles III

25 Cents - Charles III

1 Dollar - Charles III

2 Dollars - Charles III

2 Dollars - Charles III

Here are the total (non-commems + commems) numbers for 2023 : 2024 — my figures:

  •   5¢ — 28,422,000 : 61,824,0004 : 9
  • 10¢ — 43,205,000 : 77,275,0004 : 36
  • 25¢ — 80,510,000 : 82,560,00010 : 22
  •   $1 — 25,890,000 : 23,970,0003 : 2
  •   $2 — 15,130,025 : 23,530,0005 : 6

Compared to the total RCM figures, the proportions in my very limited figures are way off, but for each denomination I always have more of it in the higher mintage year, and of course less in the lower mintage year. As the coins start to travel from place to place so that the distribution for each year evens out in the country, my numbers should become more and more comparable to the total figures.

See RCM 2024 Annual Report, p. 91.

So, 2023 is overall a lower mintage year, but there are no rare or scarce denominations even thought the Charles regular (non-commem) coinage started only in November. It's a little surprising they struck more $1 coins in 2023 than in 2024.

If anyone from any country wants to say something of your new Charles III coins so far, you're welcome to do so. Has the New Zealand 10 cents finally started to show up in your change? This was supposed to be the first denomination to be struck for circulation since the advent of the King.

Hi Camerinvs

Very impressive group there and amazing how many coins they have put out.

New Zealand has still not released any coins dated after 2020, we are just so slack its not true. Cash is used by maybe 10% of the population now, elderly and the poor basically. My Uni canteen bans cash and several shops have card/apple pay only.

There are supposed to be 2022 dated 20c and $2, but these will show Elizabeth and not Charles.  They have been minted, but are shipped to our Reserve bank vault and kept there until needed, which is not yet. Apparently some 10c dated 2024 are also there, with Charlie on them. All we have are Proof coins, which are expensive

These are Proofs from last year and we have the mediocre Dan something portrait of the King, who looks weak and does not fill up the coin like his wide headed mother did.

Some official NZ Post propaganda (They manage coin distribution here) which shows better images.

Thx for the interesting feedback, Moneytane.

Yesterday I ended up checking the NZ circulation 10 cents page out of curiosity and found it rather odd that there were 22,200,000 struck for (or in) 2024 but the Numista rarity index is still at 100% (that's pretty much the only kind of situation where the NRI is meaningful at all). In other words, they're still in the vault… Hopefully they'll be released before the accession of William V…

BTW, for those interested in the British line of succession, there's a new video by Useful Charts on YouTube which explains everything in very clear terms. He looks at the first 61 (!!) names in line though he (fortunately) goes very quickly over numbers 26–61.

As for the King's various portraits, I still think the Canadian version, though idealized, is the best. In fact, you expect any monarch's portraits on coins or otherwise to send a positive, forward-looking message of some sort.

My plan is now to update my Charles III circulation finds in one year, on September 8th 2026. And the year started well yesterday 9th with a 5¢ 2024, a 10¢ 2024, and a $2 2025.

I watched that video and giggled when numbers 37 and 38 Senna and Tane Lewis are described as half Maori (More likely ¼ or less as most “Maori” are half or less and the surname Lewis, suggests some white ancestry). Senna and Tane are basically the same ethnicity as me and Tane is the same name as me. I could like seeing that “King Tane I of the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth”.

Of course I realise Tane's chances of becoming King are zero to nil, unless the first 37 people in line mysteriously get abducted by aliens. Also its likely that even Princess Charlotte's chances of becoming ruler are very remote, as its likely when Prince George gets married and has children, they will get the right of succession, unless of course it turns out George decides to be the first openly gay royal or he is barren. I am not sure that the royal family would be flexible enough to allow surrogate/milkshake or adopted babies as heirs.

Also too, those 10 cent coins were minted by the Royal Canadian Mint! All of our cents coins are from Canada.

Or, if I trust Google Translate: “Kingi Tane I o te United Kingdom me ona Commonwealth”.

Indeed, being 38th in line, it's only an amusing question of prestige. It must be quite amusing, too, to be able to claim to be that person at the end of the video who is at about 5000th…

It's now the half-year mark towards September 8th and here is an update for the first six months:

  • 2023 — 5¢: 2 / 10¢: 1 / 25¢: 13 / $1: 1  / $2: 1
  • 2024 — 5¢: 18 / 10¢: 14 / 25¢: 8 / $1: 3 / $2: 5 (4 polar bear + 1 commem)
  • 2025 — 5¢: 0 / 10¢: 9 / 25¢: 3 / $1: 1 / $2: 7 (6 polar bear + 1 commem)

This is all the Charles III coins I got in my change from Sept. 9th 2025 till today.

We don't have yet the RCM Annual Report  for 2025. I suspect the figures will be rather low for the nickel compared to 2024.

Yeah — that's pretty bad, and I laughed at the very honest “0” figure standing on its own. Poland, Mozambique and Paraguay are also at “0” but for good reasons…

I wish you'll get to see some new coins soon. I don't say this as a monarchist (which I am not) but because it's interesting to see in the coins the history that happens before our eyes, and as here, Charles is the head of state. Given his age and uncertain health condition, I suspect the E"R 2022 20c and $2 will be released and there will possibly never be any need for Charles coins in these face values. But let's hope you'll get at least a few different C'''R face values within the next several years.

When are the land of the long white cloud going to issue Charles III coins.

Probably the same time George VII comes to the throne and I am no longer around to notice it.
