Assessment of the silver coin from Bactria.

Hello everyone,

Several years ago, I purchased a small coin/cliff. According to the seller, it is a hemidrachma from Apollodotos I of Bactria. The coin is described as a silver coin and should weigh 2.45 g. The color is not really convincing for silver and probably has a very low alloy content. In fact, the coin weighs only 0.97 g. Otherwise, it measures approximately 15x15 mm, is 1.9 mm thick, and is not magnetic.

I found this piece as an approximate comparison: N#125892

In addition to the color of the coin, I am also confused by the appearance of the edge at the point of wear. I tried to take a decent photo.

Does anyone have any idea whether the silver specification is correct or what kind of alloy or material it is? I haven't found the coin on Numista yet, but maybe I just overlooked it or didn't recognize it.  If the coin is not on Numista, I will list it on Numista with the above data, unless someone knows that it is incorrect, as soon as the data seems plausible to me.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts, thank you in advance.

The third coin on this page is a silver drachm of Apollodotus I with a design similar to your coin.

As you pointed out, the full drachm is described there as weighing 2.38 g, so yours might be a hemidrachm.

I would not worry too much about the color, because silver oxidizes and if buried could possibly give a brownish color. The edge shows some corrosion and possible layers but I would not be too concerned about this either, because production methods were crude in those times and we don't know the possibly corrosive environment it was in.

There are many fakes of Indo-Greek coins, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on the authenticity of your example. Actually I would suspect that a fake might look more silvery and show less wear. Perhaps other members can help with this. It would be helpful if it is possible to locate data and photos of an authentic hemidrachm.
