1972 Dime : what causes this?!? Missing middle edge? Value?

What happened to this 1972 dime to make it look like it does?! Is it environmental from being in circulation or mint error  or both?

Just corrosion eating away the copper but not the copper-nickel clad surfaces.

That can't happen at the Mint.  The Cu-Ni cladding is done at the large sheet metal stage. The blanks are punched out of the sheet metal. There is no way that production operation could produce that.

I think a partial collar error can give an edge like that (called railroad rim), but it normally is also visible on the obverse/reverse as an unusual rim.

And yes, separately (not at the mint) your surfaces appear to have environmental damage of some type.

If it is a partial collar error, it is worth more than face value, but not a lot because most error collectors prefer the main surfaces to be attractive.

Tell me about it don’t we all…. Not just error collectors for coins….. thanks for your reply I appreciate the information and analysis ……the dime has definately been through it ….. actually  it reminds me of this old dusty woman that use to live behind me . She looked like…. well…. Like she was hit by a semi amd dragged down the interstate a few … thousand miles …. Like okay let’s paint …maybe if …. Well i suppose …. Okay imagine if an old leather jacket from the 60s came to life ,  chain smoked  pall malls and Winston’s  while  feeding pregnant raccoons Keebler vanilla cookies … dead middle of the  day,  from her hands . Oh and  had a Shes with  12 rabbits im cages that seemed to have no purpose other than being slaves or possibly now that I type this sacrifices to some pegan entity…… she did have 7 or so cats and liked to sweep …… why am I telling you this …. Good day moral of the story ….. the coin looks like hell
