Does anyone have more information or catalogues on these coins? N#28161

There is another page for 1949 (Antwerp) with a clear different design, but was there another 1949 (Antwerp) with this design or should that yearline be moved to this page:

1 Escalin - Maria Theresia - Austrian Netherlands – Numista

Both also have the same KM-number, but we know they cant' be fully trusted ;-)

I will take a look.

If the only difference is a small change in the shape of the shield, this does not mean we need a different type.

Thanks, I'm just wondering also if all 1749 coins have that same shield or not … the mintage on the first page sound a bit too high (over 5 million) for a coin hardly anyone has (4%).

I do think the design of the two shields is very very different, but then again, these coins are way older than the average ones in my collection ;-)

Yes, I agree the shapes of the shields are different.  From the viewpoint of Numista guidelines, this is a gray area.  SOme country referees might choose to make different types, others do not.

Witte has three subtypes of Escalin under Maria Theresa:

#1122 - Antwerp, first reverse shield shape, 1749

#1123 - Antwerp, second reverse shield shape,  1750

#1124 - Antwerp. Obverse coat of arms is different (Burgundy).  This is a larger difference in my opinion, and KM (and Numista) distinguish this as a different type.

Well, you're the referee for the old-Belgium coins (aka Austrian Netherlands) … so you're in charge 😉

I'll stick to my easy decisions on types from modern countries …

The 1749-1750 are now consolidated in a single type, with Witte numbers in the date lines, and a Comment showing the different shield design for the 1749 (which apparently is quite rare).

Looks nice :-)
