Science

One of my niches is Science coins. Not many countries dedicated circulating coins (or large emission NCLTs) to honor people we owe so much to. Germany stands at the top and here's a page from my album.

I really admire those who put sets together according to a specific theme. Very nice German set of Science themed coins @Dejan

Germany has issued a lot of nice banknotes honouring scientists too.

But one of my favourite scientist banknotes is the humble last One Pound issued by the BoE which features Sir Isaac Newton:

If you ever would like a chance to read a great book about the Royal Mint, Newton & the era of mill minted coins, then pick up “Dark Matter” by Philip Kerr. It gave me a greater appreciation of how the application of science has improved our lives. Fun read too.

Funny thing, Newton was one of the few Mint Masters that failed the Trial of the Pyx. As precise and thorough as he was this could only be an error and with his reputation as a scientist (and a fine or even imprisonment) on the line he proved that the reference Gold was too pure and his gold coins had indeed the right amount of precious metal in them.

That's all covered in “Dark Matter.”

According to Kerr's rendition of Newton, it was all politics (as he was “set up” to fail the trial of Pyx).  He p'off too many aristocrats in high places so they fixed the scales (or that sort of thing), although I don't recall the details specifics. It has been a while since I read the book.

Excellent collection! 😎

I collect the silver GDR 5 DM commemoratives, so I have some of those too, but for a different collecting objective!

Do you have a page of France as well? I can think of a few candidates. Marie Curie on the 100 Fr immediately comes to mind.

Mr. Midnight - France has just 4 coins dedicated to scientists. Here are the ones in my collection:

Regarding GDR, yes - they also have quite a plethora with this topic and regretfully I miss quite some.

With Newton copper Conders, he's the most represented scientist on coins.

Beside the two Germanies, San Marino takes the lead when it comes to celebrating Science and my collection of these is complete.

Serial_Number_8 - thanks for the recommendation!
