Just curious.
How do you decide if a coin goes to a envelope, or a holder, or a capsule or a slab?
I personally don´t like envelops for I like to see the coin, but avoid any direct manipulation.
I´m using the value of the coin. Up to US$10.00 - Holder, US$10-50-capsule, US$50.00+(or proof) - Slab.

thanks

My collection is in albums so the vast majority goes into cardboard flips. If a coin is too large or proof it get's/stays in a capsule and is put in a coin tray.

I have 2x2 saflips for most everything.

better stuff goes in Dansco album pages.

If its in a carboard 2x2, if I have no reason to take it out to photograph, I leve it in.

If I want to take good pictures, the carboard 2x2 goes in the bin and the coin goes in a saflip.

slabs, yes I have coins in slabs, yes I have sent coins to be slabbed. thats another discussion.

Mine all go into 2x2 flips.  I wouldn't use envelopes because I like to look at the coins in my album.  When I used to collect before it was kind of an issue for me through, because I used to collect all metals, rather than just silver like I do now.  That meant that often the flip that was worth around 3 or 4 times what the coin was, and it seemed like a bit of a waste.  I don't have that issue now that I'm only collecting silver, especially with the price of silver what it is at the moment.

What? Me Worry

Ah, just for clarification, when I said slabs, I meant  those that we buy at coin shops, not any specific slabing service.

Me too, for capsules/slabs.
And albuns for holders.

Well, i got this:

Imho, envelopes are a thing of the past. They used to be popular, BUT, paper often contains sulfur, which reacts with metal and can turn your coins yellow.

Nowadays, most collectors use 2x2s for most coins, and capsules for bu/proof coins when you want to preserve luster and prevent oxidation. For the purposes of storage, a slab is effectively an overpriced capsule. For coins hundreds of years old, they might be fine just sitting in a tray, since they've already developed an oxidized layer that protects the metal underneath.

Typically, you want to select a storage method that would best preserve the coin while costing no more than 10% of the value of the coin.

Plastic material is not 100 % safe even many manufacturer  assures so, said my museum friend. She suggest to use grassine covers used by philatelists and museums. A couple of years ago I started to put all valuable coins to grassine covers.

Indeed, that´s a good metric. However for larger coins I prefer slabs only because there´s more room for information on the label, particularly now that I figred out how to put qrcodes on them, and they require a minimum area available (6x6 mm at least)

You too! I am a Saflips boys, 100 more arrived today. Great quality and only replace 1 or 2 a month from cracking or opening up too much. Clear and make the coins look good.

Anything over Half crown or Half dollar sized is only 1 coin per 2 pockets and most coins larger than crown I use the 2.5 inch saflips.

Less salbrious, modern coins etc go on these plastic pages.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
