In what ways has numismatics added value to your life?

I’ve been thinking about how hobbies shape us.

Thus I’m really curious how numismatics has influenced you personally, perhaps in terms of patience, viewpoint, or thinking or maybe anything else?

Regards.

Rahul.

Well, no one within 15 feet of me can talk about Ancient Rome without me spouting facts.

Having a mental breakdown over bronze disease

Besides requiring budgeting and tight money management skills, I think the hobby has helped me learn about other cultures and nations.

It has also made me aware of how people are only observant in the things that interests them. I found a solid 8 radar in VG condition (a well circulated $5.00).  It had really got around the block before I plucked it from the wild. Whenever I have asked friends about what's on our money most can only answer in the most vague terms. I have always found it interesting how a lot of people think that money “is the root to evil” & other superstitions.  I know I can only talk about this hobby for a brief time around friends/family before their eyes glaze over & they start to yawn. The symbols on money often represent what a nation values (& these always interest me) but it doesn't interest everyone! Lots to be learned from these facts & observations alone.

There's also a huge private push for populations to stop using cash, in favour of digital or CC use. Besides my mortgage (& car loan) I have always worked hard to save $ for what I can afford to pay with cash. I feel like to the discipline I needed to save has worked in my favour (so it has benefited my life that way).  My consistent low CC balances allowed me to pay off debt much faster and retire much earlier than I had expected.

I really appreciate that perspective. The idea that money illustrate what a nation values is powerful. It's easy to overlook something we deal with daily.

Also the cultural aspect is one of my favourite aspect too:)

Through numismatics, I have learned how to read many languages, alphabets and numeral systems.  That has been very useful outside of collecting, for life in general.

I've enriched my knowledge of metallurgy, geography, history and culture.  I've met so many interesting collectors from all over the earth.

Five stars, would do it again.

I‘d second that.

Plus, it has stopped me moving over to paying for everything on cards or with a mobile device, because obviously I want to look through my change for commemorative coins, nothing to do with not wanting my every move logged into the surveillance society we now live in! It‘s all about the coins man, says the man in the tin foil hat 😂, found this one sooner than expected yesterday…
